I drove about 200 highway miles yesterday and had problems with (what I think was) the automatic transmission downshifting when I was going over 70 MPH. I could feel a definate loss of power and slowed down accordingly. Is this at all related to the fact the my speedometer likes to jump between 0 and 70 when I'm on the highway maintaining a constant speed? That's been happening for a while, but I wasn't losing power. PLEASE let me know what's wrong so I don't get dicked over by a shop.
Thanks for all your help

NOt sure about the downshifting. I have had two different experiences that could map out to your description. The first was transmission failure. In that case it felt like it was falling out of gear and then back in. Not very close to your description but possible. It also sounds more like the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor)going bad, what year truck is this? Have you also had problems with the cruise control dropping off? Is the check engine light on? After the problem occured did everything go back to normal? Landrover has issued a service bulletin regarding VSS failure. The first (19/03/97/NAS)should post error code P0500 and is associated with engine misfire.

The VSS signal is used for four functions (per the Service Bulletin) speedometer, cruise control, input to GEMS, and service reminder light.

good luck

The RED Service Engine light came on a week ago, but I thought that was for emissions only. I was going to reset the switch myself but haven't gotten around to it. The amber Check Engine is not on.

It's a 97, 4.0L with 84,500 miles.

If the VSS has gone bad, would that affect the downshifting?

The Cruise Control hasn't worked for years.

The way you described the transmission failure is what it feels like driving. It would slip down and back up.

ANYONE: Pics of the VSS and suggestions on replacing it. Do it yourself project or special tools required?

If the transmission is down shifting you would feel more power, not a loss of it.

Carter, Imagine going 70mph in 5th gear and then downshifting to 4th. You jolt forward and the engine revs higher and your speed decreases. Now imagine this happening without your consent several times. Up and down, up and down.
That's what I'm talking about.

It sucks.

Patrick,

the VSS going bad will make you feel like your engine's cutting off every now and then, it typically happens under load at 3-4k rpm (or, at least, it's the most noticeable). It may cut for up to 2 seconds (which is pretty damn long), and if you're quick enough to step on gas to compensate for it, it'll downshift.

Very annoying the VSS is. I had it replaced twice under extended warranty, and the only time it happened again since was going 55 in the 2nd gear at 4500 rpm, up towards the Eisenhower Tunnel at I70. Which I deemed a fair warning and backed off the throttle.

Thanks Peter.

Has anyone here ever done the VSS replacement themselves? Where is it? How easy is it to do?

Patrick, Look in the archives for how to do this. Really easy and takes only a few minutes of work. The VSS is located at the back on the transfer case inbetween the T-case and the E Brake. Look for a black plastic box that has a connection on it. All you need to remove the item is an allen wrench. If you need to replace the VSS then Discount Rovers has the best price. Good luck with it.

I can't seem to find anything on the T-case. Is it a small soda can shaped object with wiring coming out of both ends? There's one mounted on the topside of the frame which is accessable from the right rear tire well. Or is it a square object somewhere else? There's nothing in the archives about it.

Discount Rovers called it a SPEED TRANSDUCER. But from what I've seen today, that's what the older models are called. The newer ones are Sensors.
Is that right?

"...small soda can shaped object with wiring coming out of both ends. . . .mounted on the topside of the frame which is accessable from the right rear tire well"

Sounds like you just described a fuel filter. That's not it.

When you lay under your truck and look at the bottom of the transfer case, on the driver's side you'll see a little rubber boot with two wires coming out the end. Under this boot is the speed sensor plug. Pull to remove. You'll see the two prongs of the speed sensor. It takes a socket to unscrew.

The "old" speed transducers you mention were used on Rangies and D90s for the cruise control reference, and won't work on Discos. Discos and newer Rangies use a speed transducer also, but since their speedometers are electronic, the transducer/sensor feeds the speedo and the cruise. Part# YBE-something. Hope that helps.

FYI, Discount Rovers charged me $58.95, for the part (YBE100540) Speed Sensor, which is $20 less than the next best price! Others charge up to $110 for the same part. Rediculous.

Now hopefully, when I get it, I'll be able to install it correctly. I'll take pics for the Tech side so that the others like myself will be able to benefit from my lessons.
Thanks for all your help guys. I appreciate it.
