I just recently acquired a 1994 discovery automatic. At highway speeds, it occasionally (the steering wheel) shakes violently. Especially when you left of the gass usually around 50 mh or greater. I repolaced the stablizer steering shock, but this made it worse. When I am in fron of the vehicle lying on the ground I can move the tie rods vertically, It seems to havew some vertical play but no horizontal. Do discovery tie rods have vertical play. Or should I be looking for something else. Other than that I love the vehicle |

A somewhat well worn topic. Could be: - ball joints loose - swivel pre-load out of spec - out of balance tires - radius arm/panhard rod bushings shot You should have no "play" in the steering rods. They can rotate slightly +- 15 degrees (approx) on the ball joint. |

A replacement steering box is probably in your future. At least that's what it took to fix mine. I got used with 70k miles. Next time I'll get Meridian in San Diego |

Swivel bearing preload is what fixed my problem. With no axle or seals the preload should be 15-19 lbs of CONSTANT load when swiveling the outer hub. But there could be more problems as stated above. I would check preload first. Mike |

I vote preload also. Pretty easy to fix yourself. I had the same problem on my 89RR. Is it more frequent on expansion joints, potholes etc? Gordo |

I was in the Land Rover Dealership the other day talking to the mechanics, and they had a mid 90's RR in the shop for similar issues. The mechanic was watching under the hood and under the vehicle (two different times) and another mechanic was turning the steering wheel with the motor OFF. I could hear a popping sound and could see the RR move from side to side. I asked the third mechanic what was wrong and he just glanced over and said PanHard Rod. I was also told that you can test this yourself by just leaning against the drivers side front fender and pushing. If you felt or heard popping, then you need new PanHard Rod bushings. |

troy I had the same symptoms on a passenger car and it was the drive shaft, so you might want to just check if there's any play in that. |
