Hot Console

Was on the highway the other day and had my hand resting on the console over the power window switches. I noticed it was very hot. I immediately started thinking electrical problem. However, everything is working fine, no smell or smoke. It was hotter than a popcorn fart and I was travelling for approx. 1 hour. Is this normal? I would have thought the console would be better insulated from the heat thrown from the drivetrain. Not sure if this just started or if I have only just noticed it.
