65,000 miles on my 00 DII. I did all the searches and research and ordered Magnecor wires and bough a round of bosch platinums. I also went as far as getting that dielectric grease, a swivel extension for my ratchet....boy was I ready. Got under the hood and found that I couldn't get my big hands back there to change out the wires. What gives? Is there a special tool I need to get to those wires back there behind the engine? Anybody got any pointers or some small and limber hands they can loan me?

I guess I'll try this again. I'm trying to upgrade my spark plug wires to new magnecor wires on my 00 d2. It is such a tight squeeze between the firewall and the engine that I can't get in there to plug them in. Surely I'm not the first guy to do this. How did the rest of you get this part done? Is there a special tool with mirrors and stuff to help you see what you're doing? Any help would be appreciated.

I have been planning the exact same thing and have been "lurking" awaiting an answer to your post. I think I'll go take a closer look now, in fact.

they make a plug wire clamp that help you out.. but patience is a big part of it.. you might expect some hand cramps in trying to contort yourself to get the wires on...

Kelly,

did the same thing on my 96 D1 (first time in the last 80kmi) last Sunday. D2 shouldn't be much different. FWIW - the plugs were in very decent condition, and the only thing out of spec was the gap, electrodes eroded quite a bit.

The stock boots are excellent - very difficult to pull off. I had to use both hands for some of them. I am not sure that any boot puller tool would help you a lot - it is a bit crowded on the driver's side. I did not have to remove or disconnect anything to change plugs and wires.
Despite all my care, I broke two of the old plugs when I was removing them.

Now, IMHO - both Bosch platinum plugs and Magnecor wires are a waste of money.

I have a plug wrench, with a ruberized "t" handle, It is long and doesnt neet the extra space that a ratched would need, I needed extra force to remove one plug and used the small bar from my extra jack... good luck. How hard was it to get the wires to stay on?

Peter,

Going from memeory here but I think the diff between them is like the diff between night and day. It's not pulling the plugs or boots off the plugs...its the other end, which on a D2 is tucked way way down in behind the intake and firewall. Kelly, sorry I can't help...like Jim and others, I too am dreading the day.

Hey Peter,

What sort kinda of wire do you think is good for the money then? Just curious of others opinions. I never felt a difference in wires either actually.

Cheers

I appreciate everyone who made an attempt on this one. I went ahead and changed the plugs and have kept the old wires on for now. When I get a chance withing the next couple of weeks I'm going to run my 8 year old daughter through a little bit of orientation and get her out there to help change the wires. She's got little hands and should be able to reach back there.
