Very strange. Last week verything worked fine. Today at the trail head I could not engage the truck in low range. It will diff lock but it Will Not move from high to neutral or high to low. The truck works fine so that leads me to beleive that it is just a linkage problem. A visual inspection from the trail head did not reveil any problems.

What do you guys think? I am afraid that I willneed to drop the transfer case.

I've got the same problem on my 99 series II, It was recently serviced and the shifter mechanics checked out OK. Mine shifts fine when the engine is cold, but will not move at all at normal operating temp. An LR mechanic told me there was a solenoid switch involved that might have become heat sensitive...

How does it operate? Do you mean that the shifter will not even move? i.e. it is jammed in high or do you mean that the shifter moves, but it does not go into nuetral/low.

I guess now I should add this to my pre-departure check list heh?

Well, that at least points to something in the linkage or in the tcase I might guess. If it was moving, but not engaging it would likely be a different area.

Bummage! When was the last time you had it in low, was it hard to put it back in high?

I was in low last week and didn't have any problem getting back to high. I'll keep you posted on what it is.

Are you sure there is no solenoid in the the tcase as is in the D2? That is definitely locking up my shifter. I unplugged the solenoid and the shifter was completely locked. Then I plugged it back in and it shifted very easily.

I still have the proble of it not shifting when the engine warms up however.

Kenny,

YES....Alas....I have determined that the IS a solinoid in the d1. I think it is under the console next to the pass seat. Is that the same for the d2?

In the D2, it is on top of the transfer case. The most difficult to get to of course. From everything I have learned, it looks like I'll be removing my center console and getting to it from above.

just went down this road on a 93 RR. Be sure to check the fuses. If your manual is as useless as mine it wont have any electrical info or the location of any relays/fuses. We got stuck in low 100miles from home on the trails. We ended up taking the console apart and manualy shifting it after removing the solenoid, only to find out later a fuse had blown under the seat. Luckily we found helpful info on rangerover.net and were able to fix it. Good luck. Gordo

Brian,

I managed to modify my bad solenoid so that it can no longer lock my shifter. I'm very happy!
