I have 97 disco with 95,000 miles and I’m having transmission problems. I just had the filter and fluid changed and the following day the transmission started to act strange for the first time ever. When the car was put into any of the forward gears it wouldn’t go forward but would in reverse. I had to give it a lot of gas for it to start moving and then it would seem to be ok. It also would shudder some during acceleration from a standing stop to 30 mph. The symptoms were getting progressively worse and I took it into a local transmission shop because it was getting the point that I couldn’t driver it very far and the dealer wasn’t close. They have tested the electrical and the pressure of the transmission and they believe its needs some form of a rebuild for the clutches and seals. They want to pull the transmission and look inside to evaluate the problem.

Cost estimate:
Non Dealer: 500.00 to pull it out/Install . About 1,000 to rebuild.
Delaership-1300 pullout/Install and about 2500 fro LR rebuilt one.

I can’t understand why a car with only 95,000 miles would need a new transmission?
Are there any known problems with the ZF transmissions for the Disco?
The transmission shop mentioned that emissions testing can cause the transmission clutches to wear as the engine is revved for periods of time while it’s not moving? (Any truth to this?)
Any chance LR might assist with his problem?

Thanks

First thing I would do is find out from the person who changed your Transmission fluid what they did you it. Call me crazy, but if it was running fine till they changed the fluids, then I would look real hard at what they did and if they found any thing in the old fluid that would indicated that you were going to have a problem....i.e. fiber in the fluid. excessivly dirty.

The older zfhp22 auto boxes were problematic when the emission guys would hold a high idal to quickly warm the auto up to temp for emission test! lots of MB, BMW, peugeots suffered fron this, the modern zf auto boxes no longer have this problem! I wish you good luck!!!
