Looking to buy a Bike Carrier to carry 4 bikes that will fit into the hitch on my 96' Disco and 99' RR. It won't get a lot of use so I don't want to spend a lot of money. Can anyone give me some good buying advice?

I have the Land Rover rack and I LUV it. It is wonderful, it will hold 4 bikes and locks each one. The cargo door can be swung totally open with bikes on the back. The rack locks into the hitch. One of the coolest things is that it is designed to be high enough to carry bikes OFF ROAD and there is a stabilizing bar to secure the bike(s) extra tight. It came with foam wraps, tie down straps, and other extras. Since all those necessary extras are needed anyway, it was a great bonus that they came WITH the rack. I paid around $300 at the dealer for it a year ago, which is actually cheaper than the racks at my bike store. And, my bike store was VERY impressed with the design and the sturdiness. I have seen them for sale occassionally used. There was a thread about bike racks in the last 2 months. There were many posts about another rack that was working well on rovers. You might find it in the archives?
Good Luck, Jamie

I just bought a Hollywood tow hitch rack. Only holds 3 bikes but is well built and only cost $140. They make a 4-bike version. I swap it between my Disco and RR. You need to remove a cotter pin and bolt to enable the rack to be lowered if you want to open the door on a Disco, so in that respect it's not as convenient as other racks, but the price was right since I only use it occassionally. I've run it at freeway speeds and it's rock solid. It is not theft proof: you will need to buy a locking hitch bolt if you plan to leave it on for an extended period of time.

I was thinking about Model 640rr....scroll down and you'll see it mounted on a Disco.

yes. I think the swing away is a must have with the LR. mine touchs a 265/85 tire when I pit bikes on it the racks pulls away from the tire.

I use the Thule swing away hitch type, it works great it too allows one to lock up to four bikes and "swings away", visit niceracks.com.
