Ran and OBDII scan today when the "Check Engine" light came on.

Got P1496. For the life of me, I can't find out what this code is in reference to.

Anyone able to clue me in?

Thanks!

I think this is because your gas cap is not tight. Or the fuel system is suppose to stay pressurized but somehow is not. I have had this code pop up a few times and it has been because the gas cap was not tight.

found this on another news group.

Any OBD-II code whose first digit is a "1" (ie P1496) is "vendor specific." A code with a 0 there is standard (ie P0306 is a misfire in cylinder 6 on ALL cars).

There are lists of Rover-specific > 1000 codes floating around the 'net, but you have to be careful. Since they're not standardized, they can vary by model, model year, and engine management system.

For exmaple, my list of these codes does not have an entry for P1496 at all, although it LOOKS like the "4" in 1496 may mean an evap system problem. Did you leave you gas tank cap off recently, as that will cause a check engine light on your vehicle.

Thanks. I think it's the evap system too. My wife said she left the cap off the other day when a bum got a little too agressive at the gas station and she took off.

I was digging around and only found non-Rover descriptions that all involved "voltage below 5V to the sensor" which confused the heck out of me.

This is on a 1997 D1.
