I'm getting sick of getting new windshields, 3 are from rock impacts and 2 from heat stress(?). When I lived in PA I never had a problem, now here in Utah I'm putting a windsheild every other month. Any ideas on how I can prevent windshield breakage? Thanks for any help.

Well I just went and looked and the current one is a generic, SCG(?). I had PPG premimum installed beforethis one. I am getting this one replaced tomorrow morning, I think I'll request a genuine LR. Maybe that's why they break, all the glass though has been super thick, just like the stock one.

I was told by my service department, if they are not installed right that the windshield can rattle against some metal clips or something which might cause it to break. Try Pilkington glass, they are LR's supplier. My cousin in AZ put one in and hasn't had any problems.

My truck has Triplex glass in it. I've only had to replace it once due to a big honkin rock hitting it. Other than that, this stuff seems tough.

I have full glass coverage, and have replaced about 3 windshields. My insurance co refers me to XYZ glass company, and one of the glass co's reps told me to INSIST on Triplex. They slapped some generic shit in there, and I had them come back and swap it for Triplex. Only the largest rocks have starred my 'shield.

I actually was able to run on my windshield (the original was Triplex stuff too) for quite a while after the initial rock smacking it. I finally had to change out the glass when the crack turned into about 4 different cracks and safety was becoming an issue. But it took quite a while before it got to that point.

Whats the procedure with getting one's windshield replaced, I have a chip in mine from a rock that hit me while on the highway. Do I call the insurance company 1st or a window replacement shop? Also, can I request a certian type/thickness of windshield? Whats the best type to get? Thanks.

Chris,
If all you have is a chip, why don't you just get it repaired ? Some insurance companies will even pick up the whole tab because it's cheaper on them than replacement. And you wouldn't have to wonder if the windshield has been installed correctly or what kind of glass has been used as replacement.

I just call state farm (my insurance co) and they arrange a repair with a local glass company. I too have glass coverage on my policy, considering I am on number 5 windshield this year it pays for itself. I have a repair company coming by my work today. I am insisting on that triplex as a replacement, I hope they will do it right and I need no more windshields this year.

In Kentucky, by law, insurance companies are required to replace all glass without charge. Me thinks that's a good thing listening to this conversation :-)

good for you Andy, I was going to ask what 5 windsheilds cost you :-)

The glass company that replaced one of mine a couple years ago screwed up and put a 1994 RR Classic windshield in my 1996 Discovery. The fit was almost perfect, but you could see the back of the headliner looking in from the outside. You could also hear wind whistling in somewhere, which wasn't too reassuring. When they came back to put the right windshield in, that's when the company owner told me that they not only put in the wrong part, the glass itself was generic crap. He said that lots of insurance companies default to lower quality glass, but will upgrade if the customer requests it. He said to insist on Triplex. I have no idea what the differences are in window glass.

I don't know the difference, but it has the good stuff on now. I hope this one lasts, with my luck on the drive home tonight a rock will come flying up and put a nice chip in it. Maybe I should go to home depot and get a big piece of plexiglass and bolt it on in front of the windshield to protect it, I'd bet that would look good... By the way the price of the windshield alone (triplex) was $671.42, at least that's what on the bill I just signed.

don't discount the danger of even a slight crack - it can take your head off in an accident

correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think anything but Triplex is even legal to have as a windshield.
The ones that broke - did the whole glass shatter in a zillion pieces, or there was a ton of cracks but the glass stayed in place?
A non-Triplex glass cannot have just one crack - it will shatter completely and fall out.
That said - Triplex can have different thickness. I was once told that LR uses very thick windshield and it serves as structural part of the body (it does in all vehicles, but LR may have allocated a larger part of stress to the windshield).
Blue - I believe RRC and D1's windshields have the same dimensions.

It changed as per the impact, most of my non-triplex windshields had one big crack. Not one shattered or splintered into a million cracks. It was either a spiderweb from the impact point or a long vertical or horizontal crack.

The whole decapatation thing is quite a good motivator to replace a broken windshield.
