I've got a new noise coming from the engine on my 97 Disco. The best way I can describe is it sounds like a baloon when you pull the sides and let air out. A squeaky whine. Anyway, it started soon after I had my serp. belt replaced so I figure it is either alt. related or tension related? It only does it at idle and any amount of throttle stops it, even ust a slight tap. Any guesses? |

Jay, My 1995 RR Classic 3.9 V8 did that for a few weeks. Turned out to be a bad water pump. Cheers, Ron Ward |

Belt wasn't put on by the dealer but the 4x4 shop that's worked on my Rovers for a couple of years. Same place I bought the Disco from. Could it be too loose? Ron, I hadn't thought water pump. I guess I should get out my biggie screw driver and try to pinpoint the noise closer. |

It could be a bad pulley (bearings). Get the engine running and spray some wd-40 type lubricant between the pulley and engine. Do it to each pulley one at a time. If it's bad bearings, that pulley should stop squeaking temporarily due to the extra lube. from the wd-40. |

Yes it could be Asian Monitor Lizard snuck under your hood as well but it probably isn't. What it is, is a bad belt or it was routed incorrectly. Probably routed incorrectly. Check it out I think the diagram is posted under the hood. My point being let's point out the most likely repair before we go telling people their water pump is likely exploding. Just my 2 cents worth. (posted anonymously) |

Depending on the total mi on your truck, it may be that the idler bearing (#1 in diag)is on its' way out. The entire idler pulley assbly is $$$ and replaced as a unit from the stealers. You can replace it-the bearing, the only wear item- for $4-5 and 20 min of your time. It is the world's second most common bearing...avail anywhere bearings are sold:NAPA, Carquest, brg supply dealers, etc. Drift out the old using a socket, then drift home the new using the old. Two long screw-drivers needed to relax the tension of the idler spring. Just did mine last week-100k and it was shot. The pulley should rotate silently, and have ZERO axial motion. It was way past its' 'useful life' according to the brg supply house 'expert', and he said LR pilots are lucky the design allows for 'replacement'. Most do not. Easy diy project. |

And the winner is...... Mr. Ron Ward! Finally made a noise when I wasn't sitting in traffic. Pulled out the biggest of the big screw drivers and took a listen. Water pump just a squealing away. Popped the throttle, noise stopped and didn't come back after 10 minutes at idle. Guess it is time for a new pump. |
