Is there any way you can tell if your car has any valve troubles without compression tests and other advanced procedures. My engine makes a constant light ticking sound and was wondering if it might be the valves or do most discos make a light ticking sound?

From my experience, the light ticking sound is a small exhaust leak. A stuck lifter makes more of a knocking sound. Lots of things make a knocking sound (bent rod, worn wrist pins, etc.). I'm not sure what sound a sticking valve makes.

If it's an exhaust leak, you should probably have it looked into. If cold air is drawn in through the leak, that will lead to a burned valve and expensive repairs. I'm sure someone with more experience will chime in soon.

Thanks,
Mike B.

Best way to check for valve problems is a compression test. get a good shop to comp test your engine and then you have a pretty good basis for evaluation. FWIW, it is not that hard a job to remove & replace the cylinder heads. Once done, any competent machine shop can do a valve job for you. remember, it is basically a 40 year old Buick engine we are dealing with. The head design is simple and most shops would do a valve job without hesitation. Get a shop manual and a camera and go for it if you need a valve job.

Al, My DII had a light ticking during warranty (45,000 mi.)and the dealer said the noise was from rocker arms with the holes that fit the rocker shaft being out of round. They replaced them and all is quiet. Told me it was common on a '99 like mine and guessed it right, even before taking it apart. Thats about the only thing they've guessed right on my truck.
