I'm looking into lockers for my 98 Disco and need some advice. Any advice on axles and good prices? Also, its a daily driver but I do use it off road a lot so I was thinking about air lockers but I don't want to put out the extra$ if ture trac or detroits would do the trick. Is there any difference in what I should use in the front and rear? Thanks for any advice. |

If it is a daily driver and you dont want to spend the cash on the ARB's, I would go with TT's. If you run the Detroit or ARB you need to upgrade the axles (at least the rear). By using the TT's you should be ok with your stock axles. I went with the Detroit in the rear and TT up front. If I did it over I would spend the extra money on the ARB, but I like the TT in the front. It really "tightened" up the front end on the street and works better than expected off-road. |

If I was going to put a arb or detroit in I would put HD axles in at the same time. There are some on this board that havn't had any problems with running stock axle shafts but I would like the security in knowing my axles are strong enough. For HD axles I would go with Great Basin Rovers. People say that Detroits are not that bad on the road and are reletively noise free. But if you live in a area with heavy snow/ice fall you might not want a locked rear end all the time as it could result in crabbing (I dont have a detroit so I have not experienced this first hand). That is the only negative thing I can think about having one. A trueTrac is a limited slip and you could probally get away with running it without HD axles as long as you dont have a 35+ inch tire. A true trac in the front will also help lessen the feel of the loss of caster in your steering if you are lifted any. I might have missed something but others will wiggle in. |

A detroit in the snow/ice, in an all wheel drive platform is not too bad, power will tend to end up in the front if center diff is not locked! But if you choose a detroit in the rear with hd axels( a must ) you can feel the detroit when you ge from power to engine brakeing around turns, on/off ramps you wont feel that with an arb, as far as noise goes, my detroit on a 97 D1 only clunks/bangs mabey once a month or so daily driven, Good luck and have fun! The benefits will make you smile big!!! Peter. |

So general consensis seems to favor the true track in the front. Anyplace where the different types are compared or explained? |

Great Basin Rovers Website has a nice comparison of the advantages and drawbacks of most types of lockers (TT, Detroit, ARB, Etc.) Everything is a compromise. http://www.greatbasinrovers.com/aboutset.html |
