Just a quick question I thought I should pose to the site which has saved my neck (and wallet) so much over the past year... I plan on moving from Colorado to North Carolina at the end of the week (for a girl too!) I have a 96 discovery and I was planning on pulling on of the larger u-hauls for a majority of the trip. I plan on checking alignment, tires, changing fluids and such but is there anything else that I might be missing, I found out this morning that my timing gear shouldn't be an issue and the truck has handled very well on the recent trips up to Montana but I just thought I would ask for some advice before I was asking for repair shop recommendations halfway through the trip!!

Thank you so much in advance!
Justin

I think his Disco makes right hand turns.

Justin, if you ever get the urge to adjust your steering stops to make only left turns it's time to get out. :)

Brakes would be an important one to check.

Service the trans! if it has not been done in the last 30k. You will be using a lotta''normal life' on that trans towing a trailer, and fresh fluid would be highly recm'd. cheers- doug

Make sure you air up the rear tires close to max, makes it more stable

Justin,
You probably know all of this already, but if you haven't towed a trailer before, this might be helpful.
Make sure that the trailer sits level when on the flat. You will probably need an offset hitch to accomplish this. This will make driveways easier to navigate. Load the majority of the weight to the front of the trailer but don't overload the hitch. I like about a 50 to 100 pound tongue weight. I only had 100 pounds on the toung when towing a Mack engine on a tandem axle trailer. I assume you will also be using the two axle type trailer. Traveling fast with a trailer invites problems, so take your time. The rover is an excellent tow vehicle, it has plenty of brakes and more than enough engine. Just don't push it. With a full size truck you try to run it at 1/4 throttle on the flat and 1/2 throttle when pulling grades. Full throttle for no more than 15 seconds. That is good advice with the rover also. Do your braking before the turns and use the throttle to power through the turn. Whenever possible try to do your braking in a straight line to prevent trailer whip and possible jackknife. The rover has plenty of brakes but if possible get a trailer that is equipped with brakes. It will make long downgrades easier on the rover.
Enjoy the ride.

Thanks for all the input...i still don't understand NASCAR.... I really do appreciate the advice. I just replaced the brake pads and I will be having the trans fluid changed tomorrow.
I also am in the process of putting some tires on with a bit less tread to help eek out some worthwhile gas mileage.
Thanks again, and if anyone is in NC and doesn't understand NASCAR like me just drop a line.
Thanks ,
justin

NASCAR isn't quite 'hillbilly' enough for Perrone-

I used to live within "spitting distance" of the Charlotte Motor Speedway. On race weekends, the speedway actually becomes the third largest city in the state (behind Charlotte and Raleigh). It is a great area with explosive growth right now. The summers are hot, but overall it's nice. Now if I can just take your place in CO....

I want to stand before you all and apologize to my disco for everytime I have scraped my knuckles while changing the spark plugs...or burned my arm while greasing up the driveline.... I made it to Charlotte in record time towing the biggest trailer U-haul makes, loaded to the gills, through 4 severe thunderstorms and ping pong hail. The truck never waivered once and even passed a few other trucks while going up hills. now just need some clean fluids and to take the for sale sign off of it.

Thanks for all of your help and to anyone in NC Charlotte area if I can ever be of any assistance please feel free to contact me.

Thanks again,
Justin Day
