After reading the Tech article and getting all the way to the Emission Service Reminder box, removing the sticker... I can't get the light to go off. I was using a bent paper clip and poking all around in there. Am I just stupid and missing it? Do you have to flip a lever? This is on a 96 D1 SE7 with 52k. Thanks a lot.

I used a 2mm allen wrench in the hole. There were two contact pieces quite visible on my ESR box. The allen wrench was wide enough to contact both sides at the same time. 94 D1, 112k.

Cliff,

you don't have to flip any lever or push any button there. I suggest you remove the relay, and gently pry the case open. There are two contacts that you will see once you open it, and you need to connect them using any metal piece. Put the cover back on and enjoy your peace of mind for the next 52000 miles or so.

If you try to wiggle a paper clip or something like that inside, you can actually damage it.

another note - my relay's case was cracked and few retaining clips broken off, apparently by skilled hands at my friendly LR dealership.

I tried this on my 97. I ended up taking the cover off and - there is no switch in there.
I think that simply unplugging the box resets the relay, because all I did was open the box, look for the switch (which wasn't there), put the cover back on and plug it back in. Afterwards the light was off.

Greg, on my 96, the relay had a little printed circuit board in it, with a lithium battery. So I imagine it would remember its business if you simply unplug it (it did on mine). Shorting these two contacts (I guess) is the intended way of resetting the light.

Peter,
Mine is like that too. What you say makes a lot of sense. I probably shorted the contacts while poking around in there before I took the cover off.
