My Disco has a strange 'ticking' noise under acceleration. The local main dealer told me it was leaking exhaust manifold gaskets...other recent posts on this BB suggested it may be the same thing...

...So, I've just changed the gaskets on the exhaust manifold (all 8)...

Guess what ! Still making a 'ticking' noise :-(

Couple of hours wasted :-(

I can't see that I've done anything wrong, it was all pretty straight forward. Got the bolts torqued up properly.

Definitely sounds like an exhaust leak, coming from the drivers side of the engine. When the garage did the cats recently I had them replace the gasket on the manifold/down pipe joint, so it can't be that.

I'm not saying that I definitely did the gaskets correctly, but I can't see how I did them incorrectly - anything I could have tripped up on ?

Any ideas how I diagnose where the leak is coming from ?

Could the manifold itself be cracked ? how do I check for this ?

Thanks

Matt

Make sure all your spark plugs are in good condition and finger tight. Loose plug can make same sound and only show up under acceleration.

Sounds like you have a cracked exhaust manifold, common on Discos

How hard is it to replace the exhaust manifold?

From prodding around the exhaust manifold. doesn't look like it would be very difficult to replace.

Remove 8 bolts from the engine block, remove 2 bolts from the downpipe connector and it looks as though it would just lift out. Don't know if this is actually the case, as I'm only talking from an observation point of view.

I'm not saying that I'm right, but I'm sure mine only has 2 ?!

Is there anyway that a cracked manifold can be confirmed ?

thanks

Matt.

Matt...look at your Y pipe right where it hooks to the exhaust manifold. Start your truck when its cold and then put you hand up there (from underneadth the drivers side) If you feel wind, look for the crack, mine cracked right where the Y Pipe connects to the exhaust manifold. I had this happen to me a couple of weeks ago, and had a muffler shop weld it for $10.

good luck

After the dealer eplaced the gaskets both sides (DII) the problem went away only to re-occur two weeks later worse than before and on the opposite side. Turned out to be a cracked stud. Again the gaskets were replaced and a new stud fitted.
So far so good. The car has only done 25000 miles.
