I finally get to do all the mods I want starting in July. I have a 5K budget, but I have read everything on EE and Discoweb to see what priorities are. Let me recap... First priority...winch bumper and winch (ARB and Warn) and I also already have a HiLift which I can steal off of my fiance's j**p (lol). Second...suspension lift 2in...OME HD kit, maybe Bilstein shocks instead of OME? and BFT AT 235/85R16s with some trimming on rear fender Third...some undercarriage protection including southdown rear diff guard, rock sliders, pinion guards, and instead of steering skid plate, $G conversion kit? Fourth...adventure rack and some auxillary lights...much later (my dogs take up too much space inside!) Oh yeah...and Discoweb and EE stickers! I am doing all of this by myself with the help of the TECH link and if anyone has extra advice, please feel free to be extra generous! Am I missing anything? Anyone have any other suggestions. I know that all of these questions are answered, but sometimes it helps to recap for my own understanding. ~Joanna |

Joanna, sounds like you are where I was 6 months ago. Here's a rundown: 1. Winch bumper (ARB - best bang for the buck, IMHO); no winch yet, but looking at Warn M12000. 2. OME HD springs and OME shocks all the way around; 235/85-16 BFG AT TA/KO (as of last weekend - love them, but need gears now...) 3. Front diff guard and Rovertym sliders (looking at southdown rear guard, along with rockware frame sliders, we'll see) 4. No adventure rack yet - I still have to park in the garage at work every day! EE and Discoweb stickers on the passenger's side rear window. I did all of this myself with a basic tool set and the tech pages here and over at EE. You should be fine. Post some pics when you're done (although, once you start, you'll soon realize that you will never really be done.) -SETH |

Hey Joanna, You might want to get your lift before you install your bumper and winch. When i did that, my front looked like a low rider. Had to tilt my seat back to drive. At least you'll have an excuss to get your spring sooner than later. Good luck! |

Hi Joanna, Good list. IMOHO, I would list the order of the mods just a little bit differently ... do #3 first, (protection/body armor = insurance )#2 second (the same - you should have your springs and shocks first to support your HD bumper and winch), and #1 would be third. I like # 4 too! I'm only part way there ... Just my .0125 cents worth .... I'm learning too, as I move slowly along on mods Best wishes, Kim |

personally when i trick out my RR it will go like this. 1. roofrack 2. lift and shocks tires + EE spring retainers 3. dual Tru tracs and HD rear axels and RTE rear arms 4. winch, bumper, sliders. 5. RTE steering links i'm going to attempt to make my own roofrack bumpers and sliders...

Joanna, I am not blatantly plugging here, but another option you have is an Aedofab front bumper for less $$$ than an ARB. It fits Warn or Ramsey winches. Here is a pic of one on my truck... http://www.discoweb.org/attica2/S_IM000064.jpg That version is only $550 and offers a better approach angle than the ARB. I think this matters because in some cases with the box type shape of the ARB it makes it difficult to scrape up things. With the Aedofab one, I can climb things in that manner where I would otherwise get hung up pushing on a flat square. Just some food for thought. Otherwise, as far as the list goes, I didn't see a locker on there. I would put at least a rear locker on the priority schedule (which would include heavy-duty axle shafts) before the roof rack, but I don't have any poochies that ride with me. Tom |

Do you plan to do any wheeling while outfitting this rig? If so, start with the stuff that protects the truck like sliders and diff guards and such. Lifts, then tires, then bumpers, the racks and lights and all. Just my $0.02 worth Ron Ward |

Joanna, Excellent list. Maybe switch the order, like someone else already suggested. Get a dog guard (OME, Trek Outfitters, AB, etc.). Include a rear locker (personally I like ARB) and new heavy duty axle shafts(oops, tom already beat me to that). Personally I like Trek Outfitters stuff. It's very expensive but strong AND aethetically pleasing. Aedofab does make very strong products. Check out there sliders. And don't forget the most important, relocate that steering dampener! Other than that the only thing I'd definately suggest is to lose the fiance with the jeep and get a boyfriend with a Disco! LOL Good Luck, and did I mention my '95 Disco??? |

Yes, they do have a web site, but it doesn't have much other than pictures of the owner's jeep. http://www.aedofab.com/ Mike Aedo is the guy who runs the show, he can be reached at [email protected]. I dunno about the non-winch version. Email and ask. Tom |

Joanna, obviously we love giving advice on how to spend your money While unabashedly plugging EE, I suggest seeking advice from someone with more conservative tastes such as John Lee. It is easy to do too much and then hardly use it. Tom, I think that is a great bumper with its own problems. I wonder how long the cable will last with that hawse fairlead, espacially the way it angles down? If you put a regular fairlead on it, say goodbye to that scrapping-up action unless you don't mind leaving behind a few momentos I also wouldn't feel that comfortable scrapping mud banks without a bar up top protecting the body and lights. I can't tell whether $550 is such a great deal. For a little bit more you can buy ARB that will provide more protection, and yes it has its own problems too |

Moe, I don't have the stats on the hawse vs. a roller, so I can't comment. There is probably merit to that point. However, the angle is a moot point. I think there is rarely a situation where you winch with the cable going perfectly straight as to not touch any part of the fairlead. In fact, if you are winching up something, like the guys do at Rock Pile, the angle of the fairlead may make the wire drag even less. Same for turning around and winching a buddy up a hill. Yes, logic dictates to use the scrapping stuff only when deemed necessary, especially a "straight on" approach. One thing about the scraping is the sides. As I climb along, sometimes I can hit rocks or hills at an angle. This allow the the obstacle to either go under the part of the bumper near the ends, or slide up, where a lot of extra clearance is. A golden crack type example is another good one. The angled approach to that situation works well with more clearance towards the ends. Finally, you can get the Aedofab one with a brush guard for another $100. Pretty much on par with ARB. All that aside, I think the ARB is a great bumper when it comes to strength and price. If it wasn't for the Aedofab one, that or Rovertym was my next choice. The ARB just didn't have the clearance I wanted. I am glad I waited and got the Aedofab. Tom |

$100 for the extra bar on top makes for a reasonably priced bumper and there are too few of those on the marktet. The fairlead is still a concern for me. I agree that when the winch is needed, rarely is it a straight pull and that is why a roller fairlead is often superior as it decreases the friction between the wire cable and the fairlead. Taking into acount how often the winch actually gets used, this might not be a real issue. The main problem I see with the Aedofab is that if you want a roller fairlead up front, you will have to be careful that you do not mistake the fairlead as a skid plate! Tom, keep in mind I am taking the piss out you and do believe you have good system up front. Maybe I am suffering from bumper envy with my boofy ARB weighing down the front end |

Moe, Agreed on the fairlead. If you put a roller on, you should be mindful of it, same as on the ARB or others. However, the angle of the bumper may draw you towards making it hit stuff. Just have to resist the lure, muuuuaaaahhhhhhhhh! One thing I don't get is "taking the piss out"? Please explain!!!! Tom |

Tom, Thanx for the info! I am looking into getting the TSL swampers and was wondering what size yours were and how they are holding up as far as wear goes? I want to mount mine on some factory castors. Are yours r16's? if they are 15 inch rims....what are the 16 inch rim equivilent size? Thanx for the help Justin |

JCC - Mine are on 15" rims and are 32x9.5x15. You can really only hope to get 20-30k out of a set of TSL bias ply swampers, and that is probably pushing it. See the Radial Vs. Bias Ply thread: ../2/125.html"http://www.intercotire.com" TARGET="_top">http://www.intercotire.com for sizes. To me, the ultimate setup for a daily driver Rover is two sets of wheels, that way you don't have to compromise when it comes to tires. However, there is the added expense of two sets of wheels and the pain in the ass of changing them out, (which for me led to a nice air compressor in the garage with an impact wrench). This way, if you don't drive far to your favorite trails, your mud tires will last long, and your street tires will perform very well on the road. A good option may be to go with more agressive "street tires" first, such as the Dunlop Radial Rover RT's. If they are good enough for you on the trails, you can avoid the mud tires all together. If they are not, save up more money for a set of tires and rims and have the best of both worlds, and be confident that the RT's are good for impromptu wheeling opportunities when you don't have time or have not planned to do the swap before wheeling. Of course, if you do the "expedition" thing, of driving 1000's of miles to the trails, the two sets of tires setup may not cut it. Also, as always, consider your wheeling conditions and needs. Me, I am in mud a lot, so I like the swampers. I also like the stregth factor of the Bias Ply's. Tom |

Tom, I am currently running bfg at ko's, and I have the 3 inch springs with 1/2" spring spacers, spring cones, rs 9000's front and rear with upper and lower shock mounts. I am very pleased with my suspension and will probably not add any more to it! Now its just time for a more aggresive tire.....im gettin hung up in the N.c. mud! I had a '99 jeep TJ with a set of 39" boggers for about a year so Im used to the noise and the lacking of road perfomance that comes from aggressive tires. Im just not familiar with the 16 inch rim sizing! I am leaning towards the swamper tsl radials because they are a bit cheaper than the ssr's! thanx for your input, Justin |

Joanna, I'm kinda in the same boat as you are, trying to prioritize my v8i Disco 1 $4k spend on mods before the Border to Border event departs San Diego September 1st. My list goes like this in order of acquisition: 1 - ARB non-airbag winch bumper (made a mistake here, this should have been farther down the list) 2 - 2" OME HD Springs / OME Nitrocharger Shock upgrade 3 - Underbody Protection: RTE Sliders, AB Diff Guards & Steering Protection, Rockware Pinion Guard & Fuel Tank Plate (no serious off-roading before this work is done!) 4 - Dunlop 235/85R/16 R/T on Discovery spare steel wheels (5) 5 - Warn XD9000 (separate solenoid model) w/ Roller Fairlead and Optima Yellow-Top 5.5 - Recovery Kit: Tree Strop, Shackles etc. 6 - ARB Air Locker (rear) 7 - Custom-built roof rack / powdercoated 8 - Hi-Lift, Peli-Cases, PIAA/IPF light pkg The first two are done, and honestly - I wish I'd postponed the ARB bumper until after the protection purchases, but live and let learn! My $.01 here... Cheers, Erik |

JCC- you could probably sell those alloys for the price of a set of east coast rover 15" steelies. then, you are right back home finding 15" tires ! tom |

Joanna, I would seriously consider exchanging one of your options to improve at least your rear diff, if not both front and rear. For the front, TT is an excellent choice. Rear, depends on your terrain whereas rock crawlers want immediate lock, versus slip-lock, like a TT. Remember, a Detroit in the rear mandates a beefier axle. I cannot find any utility for my scenario with a roof rack. I have gone through my mod budget already. Working on new budget for next round of mods. Good luck. |
