Hi all,
Anyone here have much towing experience w/their DSII? I need to tow a trailer w/all the loot from a 1 bedroom apt 1/2 way across the country this spring.
Today I was looking at a single axle 6x12' trailer w/o brakes. It is around 1K to rent a trailer from uhaul for this, and a new one is about 2.5K. Figure I can save $ by buying, then selling a trailer.
Should I be looking at a trailer w/brakes, or is it a necessity? Any info/opinions would be appreciated.

Bill,

Get a trailer with brakes. Especially for a long haul with a full load, do you really want to rely solely on your tow vehicle for braking? Why take a chance that you don't need to take? JMHO,

Over Thanksgiving last year I towed my 69 MGB from Texas to Virginia with the Disco. I bought a trailor here since it was MUCH cheaper then renting one from U-haul. THe weight of the trailor was right at 3000lbs. With the car and spare parts it was over 5000lbs I am sure. The Disco was ok with it but I sure needed the HD springs in the rear. When I got outside of Pope AFB in NC we switched to my fathers Dodge truck and man what a difference in towing. I know the Disco was allot happier w/o all the weight on the rear.

I towed my SIII from Knoxville to Kingsport on a trailer, and was quite pleasantly surprised with how well the Disco handled it. Watch your stopping distances, don't expect anything resembling quick acceleration, but it'll do fine.

And yes, it'd be a great thing to have a trailer w/ brakes.

What about towing with a D1...
Finally realized that there are no saftey chain hooks on the reviever. What would be the best way to attach the chains? Another chain wrapped around the two bars leading from the reciever to the frame. Welding hooks somehow. Doesn't England require saftey chains on trailers?
Thanks

I was using my D1 Disco...

I have pair of small loops made of chains around each side of those two bars, just for clipping safety-chains to...

My D2 is my tow vehicle for a 22' walkaround fishsing boat. 5300 on tandem, braked trailer. It works well as a tow vehicle despite the short wheelbase (probably due to the fulltime 4wd). Our rovers are plenty beefy for tow duty. I change my rear diff fluid a bit more often, and service the tranny agressively. (Is anyone running an aux cooler?). The ETC is invaluable on the many boat ramps in the area. A friend with much lighter Malibu boat and a D1 sometimes has trouble getting the boat up one particluar ramp that is slicker than most at low tide (has to lock his center diff)

I bought a 5*10 trailer for $1100.00 a year ago...have used it to death for hauling stuff and firewood....single axle no brakes...it's fine as long as you don't do 70mph + with a full load...either Disco is a real stable towing platform. On a D1, simply wrap a chain aroung the 2 bars to attach the safety...the DII has the holes for this purpose. BTW...I saw a trailer drop onto it's chains a few months back...so they are a really good idea!
