99 Disco,1 48,700 Miles. On a cold start after 10-20 seconds putting load on engine by putting in drive.engine knocks real loud,Knocking sounds from lower portion of engine.still under warranty (bearly)dealer service said it was rocker arm assembly (right) and replaced. Now engine makes same noise with new rocker arm ass.Dealer service now says the noise is normal piston slap.Rover rep. to come out to give a listen next week, and blow more hot air.Iwas told by my service rep. i needed a new short block ,but serivce manager is saying NO, any helpful info.would be great.. knocking goes away when engine warms up. |

Sounds like you're not getting oil pressure fast enough. 02. cents. |

I have had the exact same "problem", but at this point I honestly believe it is normal. The service manager at the dealership thought I'd need a new block, but the mechanics said no, and that is was normal for that engine to sound that way until it's warmed up. Actually, even after it reaches operating temperature the sound is still there, but drowned out by road noise. You can hear it when driving on the sand. During the 3 weeks that my truck was in/out of the shop, I drove 3 different loaner discos - all fairly new - and they all made the same sound. I hope I'm right.... |

How does one go about checking the oil pressure if there is no gauge? |

I have the same problem on my Disco. Spoke to the Landy dealership, took it in, had them hear the noise, and was informed by a knowledgeable service technician, that it is a normal noise that Disco's make. |

my normal? your normal? LR normal? i had a subaru that did the same damn thing...the dealer kept saying thats how they sound? but yet he could not get another one on his lot to make that same "normal" sound i'd tell you to be a "squeeky wheel" but then he'd want 96.50 to swivel lube you I'd say stay in there face till they give you a new short block...and hope they do it right piston skirts dont get better...they get worse and once your outa warranty and you signed off on "normal" on this current ticket...your out in most states. how long do you plan on keeping it...51000? |

I had what sounds like the same knocking on my 98 D1, Canada spec, really noticeable on -20c startups, almost disappeared sometimes, eventually Landrover agreed it was piston slap and they've put a new short block in at 60kkms, after replacing the rocker gear and some cam followers.....although the new one has a trace of it too. I was told that they won't replace it if it goes away within 2 minutes. I'd keep trying. |
