Its happenening more & more frequently. I've tried GRAPHITE POWDER and SLICK 50 Spray Lube. Is this common? What's the fix? [email protected] |

Do you have an original key or a copy the dealer made? The dealer copies suck bad. Almost unuseable. I don't know if it is lack of care on the technicians part or just a poor system for cutting keys from Rover. If it is a copy, perhaps try another copy and maybe that will fix the problem. My experience with landrover dealers has been that you need a statistically significant number of copies to be generated and then you might get good one (true for both the 87 RR and the 97 Disco, so 10 years practice did not help). Another potential problem is that Graphite + slick 50 = mud. I would not recommend putting much of anything in there. I think landrover recommends a parafin lubricant. The lock mechanism is similar to most small arms and is probably better off dry than gooped up. Add all the electronic stuff in the column and it just seems bad to introduce any liquid into the locking mechanism. At this point perhaps you can blow it out with compressed air, maybe not. I have never tried. Does anybody have an idea to clean this out? Your key could be bent a little, I just clamped mine lightly in a vise to take the twist out of it. ++NOTE: The following may be obvious but I am stating it for the sake of completeness and not as an insult to anyone.++ If you are parked on a hill with the wheels turned you need to pull on the wheel enough to unload the locking mechanism so the key will turn. There is a slight inward push combine with the twisting motion that is required for this to work. I have found the motion is quickly learned and happens automatically. My wife drives the vehicle very infrequently and she almost cannot start it. cheers -jeff |

Guys - thanks. Key's probably bent. I sprayed lube one hot month - and graphite several mos. later. Each seems to nominally help. Jeff - when you say "Try a copy" of the key. You mean from hardware store? Or to order a duplicate original by way of VIN or key number? Thanks! -JA |

JA scroll down the b.board for my questions about the same problem with my '97. I have resorted to leaving the key in the ignition at all times and using the remote to lock/unlock the doors. The dealership wants $500 for the new cylinder and because I have a lease I refuse to invest any more $. RG |

Sometimes breaking-in the key works. For a while my duplicate key would only work on the doors and would not work on the ignition ('85 Celica, and it's RWD unlike the current Celicas! ). After some use through the unlocking of the doors the key started to work on the ignition. Getting a duplicate of a key is almost like xeroxing documents. They get worse and worse. |

If you have a duplicate that the dealer made and not an original, then perhaps it has a flaw and they might be able to generate a new one and not have the flaw this time. Like I said the quality of dealer-generated keys seems to be probabalistic (sp?). -jeff |

I had the exact problem on my 95'. The dealer keys suck, don't even try em. What I did was, call Land Rover, give them my vin# and they sent one cut specifically for my truck to the house. I haven't had a problem since. I think I paid 20bucks or so, but it was money well spent. Curtis |

I just bought a 1998 Disco. The key started doing the locking BS. I too, lubricated the hell out of it. It seemed to help, for a while. Like the folks on the list, I have: 1) left it in, put a t-shirt over it, and took the remote--a lousy repair, and unwise in a metro area! 2) have resorted to TONS of different key options--FYI the LR "vin method" TRULY sucked for my rig--Rover has an incorrect key code--glad I found out BEFORE I lost all the keys! 3) have pulled the column apart in a fit of desperation and wiggled things--(I forgot to bring the remote and only had one key!) Wanna know what it is on my truck? The "illumination unit." The black plastic trim bits, actually--they come with a new illumination unit. ($115 at my friendly local dealer--I have not replaced it--options anyone?!?!) Here's how it happens: When I put the truck into park, the upper bezel sometimes turnes sideways. The shifter goes into park, but not quite far enough to engage the electrical switch that keeps you from removing the key until one is in park! The solution: CALMLY push the lever toward park, turn on the ignition while you hold it in that direction, turn the key off, push in, and lock the ignition. I think the ignition needs to go back on to reset the little solenoid(?) that causes this. Just my theory. I have no manuals to decode the wiring diagram yet, but this works EVERY SINGLE TIME in my truck. No $115 illumination unit, no $225 ignition switch, no BS. It also keeps my wife from EVER wanting to drive "that pretty, but frustrating, English truck." I just smile............ Good luck, Ian |

Same thing happened to me when on a trip to Disney World last month. The key world not turn and after a very late night, outrageous cab fare to hotel, public bus back to Disney the next morning, $95 to have a locksmith who new Rovers cut a key that worked but could not be removed, I replaced the ignition cyclinder with a used one from a local Rover salvage yard (lucky we have one). I ended up taking it to the dealership and they replaced it under warranty, so I kept the good (used) ignition switch/cyclinder and posted it sale in the DiscoWeb classifieds: "Full ignition switch with wiring (pigtails) and red LED. Single key included. Very good action in the mechanism. $75 OBO." |

Guys, my 2 cents : I was talking to a friend yesterday, who happens to be the 'designated locksmith' for the local Rover dealership here in Cyprus. I mentioned that my Disco key has started giving trouble, but it was negligible. He said that as soon as this happens the cylinder should be inspected by a locksmith. 20 minutes later he had it repaired - now it's as smooth as new.
