I want to add some lighting to my roof rack and my arb front bumper. I am not really looking to wheel at night. I want lights to be safe if I get caught after dark and to light up campsites, kayak loading areas etc... What do people think of Hellas work light? I want lights but can't justify spending $300 for a pair of lights that can get broke, stolen (friend lost 2 pairs of hella 4000's off his jeep), or because I not looking to wheel after dark, (thats what the niteriders on my mountain bike are for).
Thanks for any advice.

I have three pairs of hella 4000s of the front of may disco. I don't do alot of night wheeling(well not since I was alot younger) but they sure look great. I have 4 on the roof rack and 2 on the brush guard, and when I use them at night they sure brighten things up. Go with the hellas you will be satisfied.

Somebody told me to put pencil beams in the middle of the roof rack and fogs on the sides to avoid washing the bonnett and windshield in too much light. I did this and I get a sunburn from those pencils. I think I will swap out for fogs in the middle and pencils on sides.

Just get a Hella work light and that should work fine as long as it swivels. Cheap KCs work fine on the bumper too!

Andy,

for the purpose you mentioned, the best solution was to go to any auto parts store or a truck stop, and buy a 2/4/8/.../as many as you want of $10 a pop work lights. They have very wide beam, and are not suitable as driving or fog lights. The advantages of using them to light up a campsite - less power draw (most of them use 21W regular bayonet bulbs), not blindingly bright light with a slight yellowish color, wide beam, and you won't shed any tears when you break one.

FWIW,

"not blindingly bright light with a slight yellowish color, wide beam, and you won't shed any tears when you break one."

... "blindingly bright" & "break one" ... oh forgive me, (sorry, here goes, I'm straying off the subject of thread here) I feel another confession coming on ... LOL, that last sentence just instantly put a picture in my mind of an another fine "Kim" moment ... Coming in from a night ride, arrive to find more friends, and running up to greet a certain Chung brother (for the first time in person) ... I got a bit blinded by the light on top of truck, and I did a half flip over his Pelican case, practically landing on top of him ... good thing it was a Pelican case, or I probably would have broke it (I still have a small scar on shin, and a big scar from embarrassment ... LOL)

Best wishes on the lights :) (Okay, now carry on again)

Kim

Kim,

my exact feelings from my first encounter with that certain Chung brother :) Then, fortunately, Ron Ammon's hat offered some relief to my eyes

Thanks for the replys, I am headed to the Moab area this weekend to go rock climbing and if time go wheeling. I'll stop at my favorite truck stop on the way and look for those work lights, that's a great idea. For work floods it would be nice to draw less power from the battery. As for the front of the rack, would mounting the lights closer to the sides and using 2 pencel beams up top and go with two fogs on the bumper be good for wheeling at night. Mind you I am planning on not night wheeling, just be prepared if I'm forced to.
Thanks again, Andy 95 d1
