My D1 is starting on the second try after sitting overnight, or barely making it on the first try. Is this a sign that the battery is going, or something else?

MJR,

Some things to check the battery being the obvious and least trouble. Also check the leads to the battery both positive and ground (earth) leads. It could also be a fuel starvation thing, the fuel pump in the tank might be slow in priming the system or the filters might be clogged. good luck if you need the trouble shooting procedures I can fax you the section later on today email me if you need them.

Am going thru a similar time with my 94 D1: Bad fuel pump. Went thru electrical side first (hey, it needed it anyways) and found no noise/pressure from the fuel pump. Check of electrical found plenty of juice at the connector, no pump movement. Am going for parts on monday...
BTW, mine would start and then stall out.
