Know it's been discussed before, but can't find in search. When I press the brake pedal I get a sort of 'farting' noise...what is it? Need to get fixed? TIA |

Shouldn't be happening every time you put on the brakes - only when one or more wheels is on a loose surface. Otherwise, there is something wrong. Is the "abs" light on the dash illuminated? |

I am getting this same noise when I am off roading. It is driving me batty for I think the brakes aren't really working -- even though they are. It happens when I am slidding but not dramatically..... maybe I just have a heavy foot. I've heard that if you remove the fuse for the ABS it will make this go away. Is this true? Is it a good idea to do? |

I don't think it is the ABS. I know the exact noise he means - if it's the same as mine - sounds more like something is not lubed properly, but I don't know what. A 'farting' noise is as best as I can describe it too - Bit like the noise you can make with your hand in your armpit !! Matt. |

Matt, I think I have the same noise that you have. There is a low pitched squeak when I push on the brakes, but a sort of clicking hum when the ABS kicks in. They are two very distinct sounds. The squeak may or may not be caused by the ABS, but it is not the sound the ABS makes when it kicks in. Anybody else have the two distinct sounds, and know how to get rid of the "squeak?" -SETH |

My brake pedal, no matter how softly applied, produces a soft creaking sound - not like a door hinge but more of a whine. The ABS sounds distinctly different with an electronic buzz, buzz as the system pulses. I'd also add that the ABS saved my truck last week if not my life when a 53' semi dumped a portion of its rolled fibreglass insulation load on the freeway. I was doing about 60mph, having just gotten on the freeway and the ABS definitely kept me from rear-ending a Jetta about six car lengths in front of me. I'd seriously consider leaving the ABS engaged when driving around town! I've heard that the brake switch may be related to the sound - and I've still not changed mine out! I'll regret it when I'm stuck in park somewhere. My $.01287 e |

Peter - I'm amazed at your telepathic abilities - especially as you seem to be able to tune into my truck ! Now, if you could just tell me exactly where the leak on my exhaust system is, I'd be very grateful ! :-) I am experienced enough to know what the ABS sounds (and feels like) - Mine is not an ABS sound ! Unless the ABS can come on whilst the truck is standing still ?? A creaking sound - that's a much better description - thanks. Erik - I fully support your ABS trumpeting - it's saved both a cyclist and a dog (on seperate occasions) from being run over in my two 'round town emergencies'. Matt. |

Yo Matt, that my indeed be the noise you are hearing, the beginings of brake-light switch failure. When you press your brake pedal, you should here '2' clicks meaning your switch is probably operating correctly. When it starts to fail, I heard a scratchy/creaking sound. It was the plunger on the switch that makes the sound. I was lucky when my switch failed, I was parked in my garage. Not much advanced warning when mine went south. |
