Before I run my '99 D1 to the shop, I thought I'd see if these are common "issues." Bought the rig a few weeks ago and apparently didn't look very closely. Under the hood and below the windshield on the driver's side is a black plate that looks rusted and is peeling. In the same area in a tray-type section that runs from one side to the other are a few small rusty marks that look superficial. The belt has a lot of small cracks. Underneath, I saw fluid on a part (sorry for not knowing what it is yet!) that's near the catalytic converter(?) that was fresh, but is not dripping unto the driveway. On to the back...the screws in the cargo panel that is under the back door are rusted. Problems or not?

Whew,

Are you in for a few surprises in ownership. Rust is a bad thing in any vehicle, and Land Rovers have some particularly suscpetible area. I am not familiar with areas you mention, but I am sure others here are.

As for leaks, if you continue to go to dealer over minor leaks, I hope you are a Lotto winner. These vehicles often have multiple leaks. As you continue ownership you will learn which ones are acceptable and which are not, and for the ones that are acceptable, what the limits are.

Spend some time going over all the fluids in your truck so that you learn what "kind" of fluid is leaking. This is an important diagnostic step that can lead you to the source of the problem.

Best of luck with your new truck. This forum will likely prove invaluable during your ownership. Be sure to search the archives and messages because the great majority of questions new owners tend to ask can be found there.

I know this will come up, so here's the belt routing diagram...

Thanks. Seeing the condition of the belt made me nervous...do I need to buy it from the dealership? From what I've been reading on this site (and in the archives), the Discos have their idiosyncracies that I'll have to get used to! At least I have 11k of warranty left. Are they reliable on road trips with 10-12 hrs of non-stop driving?

No need to buy it from dealer. Routinely $24-28 at the well known non-stealer sources. NAPA also will have it. It is a routine item.

Get familiar with your truck, for max enjoyment and reliability. They love 10-12 hr road trips.Do it often. Make sure there are no deferred maintenance issues. The engines are early 60's design, and incredibly reliable.
