96 DI,at 52400 mi. service engine light came on reset the light by putting the 2 prongs together in the relay , now at 53000 mi while driving on the highway check engine light comes on (truck is running fine). Is this related or just coincidence and what do you think it is ? what usually sets this light off , and is there any way to check it out besides dealership? thanks in advance.... |

answering my own question: did a search and I realize that I need the obdII to check fault code,my new question is after problem is determined and corrected does the amber check engine light go out or does it have to be reset and how is that done if that is the case. thanks again |

I had a similar prob, I believe its a dealer job to diagnose the fault with their diagnostic machine and to reset it again |

Most any OBD-2 reader (including the $120 version from www.obd-2.com) will not only be able to read (and thus diagnose the fault), but also be able to reset the fault history, in turn switching off the check engine light -- no matter the status of the problem. However, if the problem isn't solved before resetting the light, it'll be back on as soon as the system realizes the problem still exists(normally, a small number of engine on/off cycles is all it takes.)
