I did a search but was unable to come up with anything useful. My buddy has a '96 Disco with a bad Alternator. Where would you guys recommend getting either a new or rebuilt one? Thanks,
RK

check with local parts stores. many of them have affordable rebuilds around $200 or less. pep boys, napa, etc. and many are lifetime warranty.

I have a lifetime alternator from napa, and it sees water from time to time, 40k miles and it died, one call at 8am, and i had a new one in 6 hours for free, no questions asked, the price i think was 240.00 two years ago, and i dont know if all are the magnemirelli, but mine is.
Peter.

Bosh sells a very well rebuilt Merelli. They run around $300 but are worth the money. They are probably better than a new Marelli...

After replacing rebuilds a few times you'll wish you had went ahead with a new one.. and while you're at it, go ahead and switch over to Mean Green. www.4X4connection.com

Rhett, What is wrong with your friend's alternator? Recently, my Disco's electrical warning light (red battery) has been turning on and off sporadically. Is this a sign of a failing alternator? If it is, I think I am going to jump onto the Mean Green bandwagon since they are comparable in price to the OEM units.

I am not sure exactly what is wrong but he said it is making a strange noise. His Rover mechanic took a look at it and said it was about to go. He has had no lights come on as of yet. I will try to find out some more info on it.

Bought mine for a 96 at advance auto. $200 lifetime warranty. Looks exactly like OEM. works fine, should last a long time :-)

Chris - Most auto parts stores like Advance Auto will test your alternator for free.

BAPGeon carries the alternator. I think that it is $245ish ahd it has a lifetime warranty. Very easy to change out if you pay attention to where the old wires were connected. Pays to draw a diagram.

Kinda tempting to get one of those cheapo lifetime warranty jobs and stick it in the garage and off road kits so its around whenever needed...

I'm in San Antonio, Texas and cannot find an alternator on anyone's shelf for my 99 D2. I can certainly order one, but the problem is, I'm not really sure if there is anything wrong with mine.

I had a whining noise that could be a bearing going bad, but it's extremely difficult to pinpoint - in fact, I've already bought a new belt tensioner pulley because I thought I had the noise pinpointed ($94.00) Now I'm back to a possible alternator bearing.

Is there ANY foolproof method for verifying this without taking the alternator apart?

And - has anyone done their own work on an alternator in terms of rebuilds - or ids that best left to an expert?

Thanks,

Kenny

I have rebuilt the Marelli alt and its a pretty simple operation if you have a good soldering iron and can find the parts you need to rebuild it. If your alternator has not yet been rebuilt you could probably get away with just changing both of the bearings and the brush holder/regulator. I found a source for the brushes/holder/regulator for $35 and the bearings were under $5 each. I was not able to find anyone that could sell me the stator or rotor for the alt...and I suspect that many rebuilt alts dont get new rotors or stators either. I had purchased a rebuilt alt about a year ago and it started to make noise so I replaced the bearings/brushes/etc but it turned out that the rotors shaft was undersized and the rebuild did not last long. Thats when I said 'f it' and got a Bosh rebuilt alt. Not cheap, but I just dont trust many of the smaller rebuilders to really do a good rebuild.
