Does anybody know of a way to make the power seats in a 2001 D2 move back further. The distance between the seat and the pedals is not great and can be uncomfortable on long trips, especially b/c I am 6'3". There is an article in tech, but it refers to non-power seats. I have looked underneath the seats, and the rails that I think would have to be moved back seem to be riveted to the floor! Please Help!

I have been wondering this since I bought it and actually asked the salesman during the test ride. He told me someone can put custom extended seat rails in, but didnt know who or where. Looking under the seat, the stops look as if they can be moved back, but I havnt gotten around to taking my seat out yet and finding out.

There are two metal stops in the seat rails attached to the floor. I plan on removing these (they will need to be cut with a dremel tool)and placing homemade stops (machine screw and nut) at the very end of the rail, gaining about 1 inch of travel. I looked into moving the base raisl (the ones attached to the floor)back, but ther are riveted and removing/replacing them looks like a difficult task.

Christian: Keep us posted as to how it goes. If it works, at 6'5" I'd be very interested. Take pictures please.

I moved the front seats in my wife's 2002 Disco back 5" over one year ago. You wouldn't believe how much nicer it is for me to drive now! (6'7"). To do this, I had to remove the stops, drill out the rivets, cut the welds holding the tracks to the base. I then added some additional pieces to allow the tracks to be reattached 5" farther back. After having to make some low profile bolts to replace the rivets, I reassembled and inserted newly made seat stops. Remember that the seat stops are safety related. In a crash, they are there to prevent the seat from running off the tracks, although I figured that the seat belt attachment to the floor would take a lot of that load.

One other thing, I bought a set of seats from a junkyard so that I could get the bases from them. This way, I still have the original bases when it comes time to resell. As long as the new vehicle is 2004 or earlier, I will be able to reinstall my bases!

This was quite an involved project, but I only used hand tools, a power drill, and a dremel cutoff tool. Obviously, it would have been easier with more metalworking tools, but......

Doug, do you think it's possible to move the seats back by just removing the stops?

Appreciate your input-

Christian

I am the one that posted the "D1 legroom tech" thing. I finally stumbled across someone's D1 with power seats at the lake, and I was looking around under there. From first glance it looks like the tracks are offset like on a manual seat, so in theory you could remove the whole track mechanism and flip it 180°, but it might take a little hacking or drilling, but at least you wouldn't have to shift the whole seat frame. Also when you pushed the button forward the seat would move backward, and vice versa.

I figured it out by just taking everything apart and fiddling around, anyone wanna volunteer their D2 for disassembly? A contribution to the tech section benfitting we tall people around the globe?

Christian,

No, you run out of travel on the screws pretty quickly. I can't say for sure how much you would get. You could just run the seat all the way back and take a look at how much more travel is left on the screws.
