Well mine started to act again - it just refuses to get reading from time to time (either that or engine by some miracle making 50mph on 0 rpms).

Can someone point me where the bloody thing (sensor itself) positioned? I presume its just electrical thing (corroded wires), as everything else seems to go ok.

If I recall correctly the RPM gauge gets its information from the Alt. Which means you may have a bad one. I would at least test it, but sounds like a possible problem.

Well alternator seems to do ok, at least if i disconnect negative lead from battery, while vehicle running - it aint dropping dead..

Guess i can live with it for now.. Wife promissed me new alternator for b-day :-) Then we shall see again. It just bugs me, but not enough to cough up more money right away, as i just got new tires and suspension (not installed yet).

I know the feeling, just got OME 2 HD lift and Bilstein shocks for my 97 Disco.

If you have a multimeter, you can check the voltage coming out of the altinator, or go to a local auto parts shop and have them test it. Normally this is free.

There are two small dia wires coming out from the back of the alternator, one i dont know what it does off hand, bot the other sends the signal to the tach, you might want to pull and clean both the connectors and their mounts with a wire brush or pencil eraser and reattach, see if that solves your prob befors getting a new alternator, i once had the same prob due to a kinked wire,
Good luck
Peter.

Wow, I'm not sure if I am brave enough to disconnect the battery while the engine is running on a modern computer controlled vehicle!

hmmm bad wire, I will have to put that in my things to remember folder.

Thanks.

Of course I hope all of this knowledge I have been learning doesn't need to be used, but you never know.

I have a TDI and had the same problem.

Bad contact at the back of the alt.

After trying to "retighten" the little flat female electrical terminal on wire which runs out of the alt, successfully for a while, it started to read crazy again.

I then took a little piece of wire, attached a brand new flat female terminal on it, and welded it to the old wire.

Works like new ever since :-)

Check that first.

Regards.

Erik.

I had the same problem with my disco and it ended up being the fan belt was installed improperly. The dealership routed it wrong after they replaced it, when I took it back to have it checked up they routed the belt correctly and the problem was fix. My RPM only faulterd when I first started the car or when I came to a stop!!! Hope this helps anyone with that type of problem.

I had a bad alternator and the RPM was not working. When I changed to a new one, then the RPM gauge started working again. So, have your alternator checked by a professional.
