I am thinking to replace my Disco II rear bumper. Who makes one besides safari gard (too expensive) or aedofab (don't like the look). Thanks for any info.

Finally did the mods, here's what my truck looks like now:

I have a trek outfitters rear bumper, easy installation and decent look. Greg davis also makes a rear bumper that is pretty cool.

I have trek outfitter, too. Well worth it and no fender cutting. Where did you get those black steel rims for your disco.

The steel rims from Atlantic British. They come slightly offset like that, no spacers needed.

I think if I do a rear bumper I'll go the fender cutting route for its added benefits.

Jamil,

Nice looking D2.

There are many folks who like the trek Outfitters Version. I have one and Jason Bard is another happy owner of the TO version as well. Here's a pic of mine:

I have seen the Greg Davis version and it looks like a very strong, well inegrated design. I would contact him.

Jamil,

I'm a very happy owner of a Greg Davis rear bumper and highly recommend it if you don't mind cutting. The increase in departure angle saved my rear quarter panels on numerous occasions.

Thanks Steve,
Do you have any more photos of your bumper /back end? Closeups or in action? I've seen the ones in Greg's gallery, but I would like to seem more before I make a purchase.

Did you attach a skid plate since now the fuel tank is expoased without the trailer hitch.

Jamil,

I hope to address the skid plate issue in the next couple of weeks. I know that Greg has already come up with something for his, but I've yet to see it. Maybe he'll post some photos soon.

My trucks down at the dealership right now to have the rear-end replaced, but once I get it back next week I'll take some close-up pictures for you...don't really have anything right now. Aaron Owens just picked his bumper up from Greg so he may have some pictures available too.

Jamil, I recommend the Greg Davis bumper as well. I have a high res of the photo above of Steve and also a couple of the bumper itself. Nothing up close though.

Email me if you want the pics.

RE:"Did you attach a skid plate since now the fuel tank is expoased without the trailer hitch."

I ran into that very same problem when I went with the GD bumper. I already had the Trek skid and didn't want to buy another one. I ended up having some quarter inch brackets made... I attached them to the rear of the skid frame to the gas tank strap bolt locations. I also added a quarter inch piece of aluminum to the rear skid plate frame to add strength. I jacked the rear of the truck off of the ground using the skid plate as the jacking point with no bending or bowing. Real world driving in Moab produced no bends at all so it's plenty strong. Here is a link to a photo to give you an idea of how it looks. http://www.pnwx.net/moab02/day2/121-2169_IMG.JPG

i was on the pirate 4x4 website and saw a picture of Greg Davis' Disco .... i sent him an email and asked him a couple of questions .... i had no idea who he was or what he did as far as Rovers were concerned .... he took the time to send me tons of info and help stear me in the right direction ..... the majority of the mods to his Rover a custom fabricated by him ... after corresponding with him and seeing more of his work i wouldn't hesitate to use his equipment ... Greg Davis knows Discos

Marc,
Thanks for the photo. Did you ever bang the trailer receiver on the rocks? How strong is it? It looks like a hard bang could rip it off.

Just for the record, that hitch is fully welded and is an integral part of that bumper. If it gets torn off, there will be a couple of end pieces of the chassis attached to it.

Seriously though, if it were to be hit that hard, the factory bumper mounts would deform before that hitch went anywhere. I don't think that will ever be an issue.

And Sam, thanks for all of the kind words.
