I think that my starter may need replacing, but I am about go through the process of cleaning the contacts and ground first. However, I assume that even to do that I will have to take off heat shield which seems like it is going to be a problem. Are there any secrets to getting the shield off or cleaning the contacts without taking off shield?

it is held on by one bolt towards the front of the truck.
after that its just a clip which attaches to the starter.

shouldn't be hard to remove at all.

it's a tight space but you should be able to get at everything without removing anything else.
