Who makes a good set of off-road tires. Specifically in the 235/85/r16 size?

Either BFG Mud-terrain or Cooper Discoverer STT. I believe the BFG sidewall is a bit tougher than the Cooper though.
Don't know what type of wheeling you do- but these are louder than an AT tire but worth the trade-off IMHO. I wouldn't buy these for a daily driver though.

Both make your size in an E load range tire. If wanting to save some $ try going to your local America's tire (or Discount tire in IL) and ask about their Durango MT in that size and load range. It's actually a Cooper Discoverer STT sold under diff name.

My 2 cents-

Kuhmo Venture MT's are a great tire at about 60% the cost of the BFG MT.

Limited size availability, but 235/85-16 is one of them!

my vote... GY MT/R's...

but dont take my word, look what others have to say about the three of these tires....

Key: Superior (8.6-10) Excellent (6.6-8.5) Good (4.6-6.5) Fair (2.6-4.5) Unacceptable (0-2.5)

Best prices on the web....

4x4groupbuy
MT/R's $135
BFG MT KM's $135

TireRack
MT/R's $136
BFG MT KM's $136
Kuhmo MT's $88

The Kuhmo's have similar numbers as the MT/R's and slightly higher numbers then the BFG's... BUT take into consideration that they have 1/4 as many reviews and 1/5 as many miles as the MT/R's and 1/2 as many reviews and 1/3 as many miles then the BFG's... BUT they are CHEAP!!!! $88 vs $136.

Speaking first hand... i've spent the last five years wheeling my 95D1 with the stock Michelin XPC's and always had a good time... when i switched to the MT/R's i expected better traction... but i must say i never expected a such a huge difference in traction!

i love these tires!!! when i was looking i seriously considered: MT/R's, BFG's and Bridgstone's... all are compareable in price and "expected quality" and i'd bet a dollar you'd be hard pressed find a big difference between any of these.

just my 2 cents
