I have a '97 D1 with 102K miles. I recently had my Optima red top battery and factory alternator checked at AutoZone. The alternator was fine, but the battery showed the following readings: Volts: 12.27 (should be 12.45 according to them) Amps: 10.9 (should be 11 according to them) The Optima is no more than 1 1/2 years old. Since the alternator checked out perfectly, they mentioned that the starter might be going bad and causing a large draw on the battery at startup. Three questions: (1) Should the Optima red top have these readings at its relatively young age, or are the above readings actually within range? (2) How do I perform a load test/overall check of the statrter? (3) Could a grounding issue "hum" that surfaced recently and then disappeared cause the battery to do this? To eliminate some variables, my D1 has not been modified in any way (no foglamps, etc), and I keep the battery terminal contacts/cable clamps so clean on the contact surfaces that they are regularly a bright silver color. However, the battery/starter cable has not been examined. Thanks in advance for your reply. |

To test the starter, you will need to pull it and take it to Autozone or similar location and have them bench test.....At least that is the only way I know how to test a starter. |
