Hello all, I've been having issues with my brakes for approximately 7k miles now, and am at a loss on what to do or even look for now. The brakes seem to pulsate like ABS kicking on when applying light pressure to the brake pedal at low speeds, I've never noticed it doing so under severe braking or at higher speeds. About 2 weeks ago, I noticed a pressure loss in my brakes and replaced the master cylinder, this seemed to eliminate all problems but as of today the small problem is back. I am not losing any noticable amount of fluid, the reservoir stays consistant. Is there anything you all could think of or have you had similar problems? My ABS light is not on nor has ever illuminated signifying that be the problem. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.. |

Disconnect the ABS pump under the hood and see if you still have the same problem. |

I disconnected my ABS pump and it cured a lot of brake inconsistancy. We ran into a late spring snow and freeze last weekend and I rehooked it up (the ABS) and the first time I Hit the brakes, leaving the filling station--- KRPHITTSSST-ST-ST-ST-ST ! ---ABS madness struck. Here's How I did it 97 D1, 4.0, North American. Lift Bonnet Look for Master Cylinder (where you add brake fluid) its on the big round chamber (18cm diam) mounted on the bulkhead (firewall) opposite the brake pedal. There are metal tubes, 6mm diam +/- screwed into the master cylinder. Look about 10-20 cm ahead of the master cylinder, atop the wheel well (still under the bonnet) and you'll see a metal housing with several of the same tubes screwed into its sides. This is the ABS unit. This box has a wire harness (loom) plugged into it with a plastic plug. Remove the plug from the side of the box, carefully manipulating the little latch as not to break the plug housing. If the ABS light on the dash comes on, you've done it right. My ABS light didn't come on, but the ABS was disconnected. You might consider protecting the connections in the plug with a patch of tape, to prevent clogging, or a glop of grease, to prevent oxidation. BY ALL MEANS USE THIS ONLY AS A METHOD TO TEST THE BRAKING SYSTEM, I ADVOCATE UTILIZING ALL OF THE SAFTEY EQUIPMENT INSTALLED BY THE MANUFACTURER (although I don't follow my own advice!) Steve Cz |
