I've got a leak coming from my transfer box in the area between my TB and transmission. It seems to be dripping down around the Hand brake "drum" or whatever that is. Can anyone tell me what gasket needs to be replaced and what kind of cost (roughly) I should expect to pay if I take the beast to an independant shop? Thanks.

Bill,

Not trying to be rude here.....but the folks of this board cannot help you out unless you tell them the year and model.

AND....how BAD is the leak??? Top it up with Lucas oil stabilizer first, on my D1 it stopped the oil leak completely for 2 years before I sold the car...on my current D2...well, it's a work in progress, but it's a BIG job to fix...and guess what....you may have the same problem recur all too soon....Pete

Bill,

I'm a little confused here:You say that the leak is inbetween the transmission and the transfer case. But then you say that te leak is inbetween the transfer case and the hamd brake drum. Which is it? Or is it both???

If you have a leak in between the transfer case and hand brake drum, then you will need to replace the rear oil seal in the transfer box. Also, test your handbrake to see if it works or not. If the rear oil seal has busted then your handbrake won't work (i.e. oil on the brake shoes). If your handbrake doesn't work then you will have to also get new brake shoes.

Sorry for the confusuion. Its a 95 Disco. The dripping is coming out of the area between TB and transmission, and some fluid is dripping down from that circular looking black thing thats shaped kind of like a brake booster (?). Its dripping about 3 or 4 quarter sizes every time I shut off the engine. Also, my handbrake seems to work fine. Sorry for any confusion
