You sure it's the center diff and not a cv joint? You say Quote:when I turn corners I hear a loud clicking coming from down under
... Are you running your diff locked on the steet?!? A little more/better info would help... Craig |

I was just testing my CDL on the street. In a straight line it works fine (no clicking) light on dash comes on CDL engages but if I turn a corner (left or right) which I know is hard on the gears especially on solid pavement , I hear a very loud clicking. I'm not sure where it's coming from sounds , but it sounds like it could be the front diff ,and this only happens when I'm turning and the CDL is engaged not when operating in regular mode Ie CDL off and in HI gear. I was thinking that the previous owner could have damaged it from driving around with the CDL turned on before and not realized, but I'm pretty sure this Disco has never even had the CDL engaged , in fact the shifter was " seized " in the unlocked mode when I got it . Further to that I have noticed that I'm leaking oil (puddle under the front diff) I know this is uncommon on Rovers ; ) and there is a redish (rusty ) coloured almost sludge like liquid which gathers on my left front tire. I can see this coming from the seal which is around the sivlver ball on the inside of the tire by the brakes. Are these emergency items to have fixed . I haven't gotten around to doing them yet. Ken- sounds like the CV joint may have grenaded, and chunked up the swivel ball in the process. Hence the leak at the ball. Pull the axles and have a look before venturing into the tcase... Then again, not quite sure why you experience this in difflock and not out of difflock ??? anyone?? fwiw- Craig |

Just a guess but is it possible that when the CDL locks the front axel it is causing some gears to grind ? Are ther other gears that come into play when this happens . I've not a gear person and don't know too much about upgrading diffs, and adding lockers etc. |

um ... what am I not getting here? I thought it was normal to hear that clicking sound while in a tight turn (especially on pavement) with CDL engaged ... (don't ask me right now how I found this out) ... is this not the case? Would someone be kind enough to explain this to me (please no flames, if I'm mistaken, I need to learn as well ) As for the other symptoms, i.e. rusty color sludge like liquid, I wouldn't know either. Best wishes, Kim |

Hey Kim If you've been running like that for a while and the " clicking " has proven to be anything serious then hey , I'm happy , kinda like getting used to the "extra " lights on my dash ! but this clicking to me is pretty scary I'm worried a gear is gong to fly through my dash board : ) if not and like you say this is normal , any re assurance is always comforting. thanks in advance. Come to think of it, I noticed the clicking noise was much more pronounced when I had a different (new) T case in it. When they finally figured out they had installed the T case with the center diff locked, (even though I kept asking about the center diff in the first place, grrrrrr) they promptly removed it, and my old one was put back in (this time with center diff unlocked). Just how loud is this clicking? Nevertheless, best wishes, I hope it's nothing to worry about also. (i'd rather some of the guys here comment on it a little more tho'- I'm not the mechanical genius here) Kim |
