OME Springs & Shocks VS Rovertym Springs with Rancho Schocks.: I want a 3" lift on my DS II and I am still traying to decide which ones to buy. I hear good things about both. The only difference is the price. Rovertym with Rancho shocks are a little bit more expensive because you have to buy cones ratio arms etc. suggestions on which one is better? or which combination is the best? Is it worth it to get rancho because of the better articulation? Thanks a lot! Gus Moreno. 'The Camel-eon' 2000 DS II |

I've been real happy with my Rancho's. Have put them through plenty of rough treatment without problem, but have seen several break with RTE mounts (mine are from Rockware). There are other differences also. Sorry to complicate your issue, but you may want to look into the pro and con of retained vs. unretained rear springs. Unretained gives you plenty of rear articulation, but at the cost of increased body roll and possible loss of off-camber stability. I'm unretained right now, but am looking strongly at $afari Gards new "droop kit" to retain the rears while keeping articulation.

Gus, Here are a couple of pics that show good articulation, but at a price. I should add, though, that you don't often encounter ramplike conditions on the trail and I have never felt any loss of stability due to my unretained springs. Great Articulation - RTI is about 650
A little tilty???

http://www.discoweb.org/thewindow/content.htm racnho is just bad, even with rockware. i destroyed several sets of rockware top and bottom mounts. switched to RTE and did well, still hated those shocks. funny thing is everything else RW makes seems good. |

Gus, just keep doing your research on OME springs/shocks, RTE springs, & Rancho shocks, and the answer will be clear. |

Bilstein shocks and RTE springs work great. I hated my ranchos and they broke twice. |

Gus, one issue no one has mentioned with your Disco II is that your stock brake lines and ABS lines wont alow for that type of articulation. I recently lifted my 03' and used OME springs and shocks. I installed the lift that EE seems to recomend to everyone with a DII. OME srings and a 1" spacer in the rear. We have had great luck with this so far. |

Why do the Ranchos break? Seems to me that would only happen if the shock got over-compressed or over-extended. Or was it the RW mount was bending and taking the shock eye with it? Why would this make the shock bad? Just trying to figure this one out. I have OMEs on the shelf so I have no personal interest in running Ranchos but I just want to know what exactly happened. Thanks. |

for the same reason some springs break - they're just not up to the task. |
