Has anyone taken out all of their carpet and replaced it with Herculiner? Any Problems involved with this?

Justin - No, but I did just that with my Samurai. As a 5th car, it was just going to be a clean trail rig, but for some reason, I drive it 4 days a week and the D1 once or twice. The Herculiner I rolled in is fine for daily use, doesnt look out of place and looks right. Its significantly thinner (partly due to my application, I could have gone thicker) then a professional spray in liner though, to keep in mind. I wouldnt put it in my wifes F250 truckbed, I'll wait till I rhino/X-line it. I'm keeping the carpet in my D1, at least for a few more years, but I think it would look sharp.

I pulled the drivers side carpet and sound insulation to clean the floor board and the rear cargo area . There is more noise in the cabin now and if you pulled everything out it would surely be even louder.

The herculiner does deaden the sound, but not as much as the carpet and padding. I have all three in there and it is significantly quieter than stock.

Justin, I wouldn't go with just the herculiner unless I was using it soley for a trail rig.

Yea,

But DAMN does that foam padding and carpet hold water. That rhino=lining is starting to sound real good to me now that I have cut out all my old foam padding and fiberglass sound deadening.

Amazingly, my truck isn't much louder now than before even though I only have in rubber mats over the steel flooring.

Perrone,
If you have already taken out your genuine LR sponge rust promoters, then go ahead and herculine the entire floorboard. It isn't that hard to do and it makes a significant difference in sound and durability. One gallon can do the entire floor board. $95/gallon at your local K-Mart for Herculiner and it is tough as hell and pretty damn thick. It is polyurethane based and supposedly much tougher than the vinyl based spray-ons. Looks good too.

The first damn thing I need to do is clean up the rust spots on the floor. Then use a rust inhibitor. Then I'll worry about herculiner or whatever!

I'm thinking of just putting some diamond plate down there and being done. Put the rubber mats over it for normal use, and pull it up when I get ready to go wheel. That $95 is enough gas for a long wheeling trip!

How hard is it to remove the tranny trim (around the shifter and stuff) and remove the lower dash. I want to get that carpeting out too at some point.

The console comes off pretty easy, the lower dash and heating system is the hard part.

I think you have to take the heating system out to get all the carpet out of there. It looked like such a pain in the ass that I just taped the padding and carpet up over the hump and coated up as far as I could.

As far as rust inhibitor, I just sanded the rusted spot down to bare metal and scuffed the rest and applied the Herculiner right on it. That was what the mfg. recommended. They said primer can cause problems. Seem to adhere like a champ.

would there be any problems with putting down the herculiner and then putting back the carpet and rubber foam pad. This way it wouldn't rust but still be quite. Just an idea. Daniel

The first time you get that carpet wet, and especially that foam, you are going to hate it. My foam still had water in it 8 days later. I just cut all that stuff out. I didn't ever want to deal with that again.

Daniel,

That is what I did. I put the herculiner in for rust prevention and then replaced my carpet and padding. The padding will still hold water, but this won't cause rust so just let it dry.

If I do get wet again, I will just be sure to alllow plenty of ventilation so as not to have mildew.
