Hey All,

Emptied and renewed my swivel oil on Friday and now have a leak from the passenger side (oil dripping down wheel onto tire). Any hints/tips on doing this and what parts I need to complete the project (including tools)? Estimated time? Will I have it apart enough to repack the bearings as well? 95 DI w/ 95k miles. Thanks!

Robbie

How much oil did you put in there?

about 1/3 a quart in each one. Just enough so that it came out the check hole. Driver's side is fine, no leak, only passenger side.

can you determine exactly where the leak is? Due to the location of the swivel seals, it's unlikely that a leak in them would make it onto your wheels unless you park on an angle.

i just noticed today at work, and i did have it parked at a bit of angle last night (up in the lawn for street sweeping). when i get home tonight, will take of the wheel and post back tomorrow. Thanks.

also make sure it's not brake fluid leaking out of your caliper.

Yea,

put some on your finger and hold it up to your nose. That should tell you if its 90wt or brake fluid.

Out of curiosity, why does the Rover have to be on an angle for a leak to be detected from the seal??

It doesn't. But it would be pretty tough for a swivel seal to leak onto the wheel unless the truck was parked on an angle.

I'm missing something here for sure. If something is coming out, it is going to go down to the floor along whatever is in the path such as a whell/tire. Yes?? No?? Again, just curious on this.

Well James and Anon (jeez it bugs me you guys are afraid to say who you are on such mundane subjects), I don't know about your trucks, but on mine, the stock wheel isn't wide enough to fit under the swivel seals. So at least on my truck, the oil would drop on the ground or perhaps the tire, but not the wheel. Maybe your trucks are different.

mine hits the tire

You need a 14mm (I think) 12 point metric wrench and some other metric crap. A new seal and a new retainer would be nice.

As always a BFH is indespensible

Say for me an hour or so. Undoing the axle from the housing with only a wrench is a PITA but it is quicker than taking everything apart.

You can buy that gasket new or just RTV it.

I use 85-140wt in the swivels, no problems with leaks.

alright, was out yesterday. it was definitely 80/90wt oil. when i checked, it looked like it had dripped just a little from the back plate (this all idiot mechanic speak) attaches to the swivel box, and like a liquid does, ran across the bottom of the swivel box to drip on the edge of the outside of the rim. like a little stream of water will follow a piece of string horizontally. i tightened up 3 7mm(?) bolts on the back, and so far, no more drips. hopefully it was just that. thanks for all the tips, hints and arguments guys :)
