Hello there, this is my first post to this bulletin board. I have searched the archives and read several good posts for troubleshooting Cruise Control problems. I've checked all vacuum issues, no problems there, so I'd like to test the brake switch. Is there a way to do that? If so, what is procedure. Thank you for your help. Kit 98 Discovery LE |

Kit, What are the symptoms and what did you do to "test" the vacuum problems? |

Hi Rob, CC was intermittent for a while, then gone for good for last couple of weeks. I checked the actuator bulb, which held vacuum very well, then visually checked the line from the brake pedal switch, through the firewall, the T junction, to the actuator bulb, and from the T junction to the vacuum pump. All the lines are soft and supple, no cracking nothing. My father's shop has a Vacu-Tec smoke machine for testing vacuum so we hooked it up, no smoke leaks anywhere. We have since checked the switch for continuity and think we have determined that the switch is bad. Waiting for new switch to try tomorrow. Wish me luck. Thanks, Kit |

Kit, Did that work? If so, whats the test for the brake switch? (Assuming that was the problem and your old one does X and the new one does XY with an ohm meter or other test?) I'm in the same boat, read all the CC posts, replaced all the vacuum lines, still no CC... |

Hi Roger, You need to take off the black trim piece that covers the area above the pedals in the driver's side footwell. When you look up under there, you'll see the switch with a vacuum hose and electrical connecter attached to it. First, make sure that that vacuum hose is OK and attached correctly, if so, remove it and the electrical connector. Then, with an ohm meter check for continuity across the terminals on the switch with the brake pedal disengaged (up). If you have continuity, press on the pedal, you should loose continuity with the pedal engaged (down). The point is it should be one way with the pedal left alone, it should be the other way with the pedal depressed, if you get continuity both ways that's a problem, if you don't get continuity with the pedal up, that's a problem. HTH. I'm going to post a legthy post about my testing procedure. It ended up being the Cruise Control ECU. I'm going to post it seperately from this discussion, so if your test doesn't pinpoint your brake switch look for my Cruise control troubleshooting guide to be posted in the next hour or so. Good luck, Kit |
