Yeasterday i dropped a pen down there, while retreiving it i moved the seat a bunch, now i cant get it back, if i want it to go foreward, it wont but will hapilly go back, this is going on with the up/down thing too. it's on a D1 1997, now all i want is non power seats that look the same and have the same adjustments! is this a reality or a dream? I've already cleaned contacts and checked fuses. This is an intermittant problem, Do i need new switches? or just new seats? Thank you for any suggestions. |

the contacts? that the seat switch plugs into or did you take the switch apart? you need to clean the inside of the switch. i warn you, it is a complicated think to take the switch apart and reassemble. it is full of ball bearings on top of copper contacts and ball bearings with springs and did i mention ball bearings?. peep this link click here -rd |

Do what I did, change the wires around so you can get the seat where you want it, then unplug them! Either that or spend the mula to buy a new switch. |

PAIN IN THE ASS!!!! Be careful. If you have EXTREME patience and a VERY VERY VERY steady hand, go for it! Make SURE you don't allow the contacts to touch certain areas or you WILL spark and fry the fuses under the driver's seat. I just experienced the EXACT thing. Seat moved everywhere except forward. Better off getting to a point where the first face plate is off.......spraying a CRAP load of contact cleaner in there....shake around like a MArtini and hope you cleaned enough gunk off the contacts. If you can, AVOID taking it apart, but if you DO, take it apart IN A TRAY to catch the BILLION springs and ball bearings and contacts. If you wind up needing a new switch, CONTACT NATHAN or DEE for excellent service and parts. I just did and it was a very favorable experience. |

Well, the link was great, I looked, I went to work,I dissassembled and springs, ball bearings, and those little brass rockers went, well away. them the cleaning began, by the time all was cleaned, there was alot of blackened contacts, I don't think contact cleaner alone would work. I took a tube of noalux(dielectric grease) and dabbed all the contact areas, dropped in the balls and springs, then for the smart part, placeing a small dab of grease atop the springs, i dropped the balls onto the top of the springs, holding them in place, It worked like a dream! This is a great way or saving $100.00 plus dollars, i think that this whole operation took about 15 min. Thanks again! Peter |

Peter: the same process is needed for the window switches WHEN they get that grunge build-up on their contacts. They have only a few moving parts, so are MUCH easier. But you will have to do them. They ones on the console are the worst offenders. Another rainy day project. cheers- doug |
