Does anyone know a link that gives actual tire circumference based on tire size? My warranty carrier, who shall remain nameless unles someone asks specifically, denied my claim for a CV joint based on the fact that my change in tire size (went from stock 235/70-16 to 245/75-16), created a variance of greater than 4% in my speedometer/odometer. Basically I'm trying to prove them wrong. Just preliminary checks with another vehicle, that I have no reason to believe is innaccurate, shows no more than 2 MPH at 65 MPH. But I'd prefer to find some hard data if possible. Any ideas?

Oh, by the way, the tires were changed after the original claim was put in, which I can prove.

Hmm.. Doesn't the D90 use the same CV? Don't they come stock with 32" tall tires? Surely LR wouldn't ship a stock truck with tires taller than what you have installed if the CV's couldn't take the load...

Problem is, they don't care about the cause of the failure as they should be, what they care about is the fact that I have 5 yrs, 75,000 mile coverage and the tire size difference is going to make it last longer. Or at least that's the impression they're giving me.

Do the math Brian-
((235x.70)x2)/25.4+16 = 28.95"

((245x.75)x2)/25.4+16 = 30.46"

fwiw, trying to claim a broken CV on a larger than stock tire is going to raise some eyebrows with the warranty co. to say the least. Keep your composure, show them the documents, and proceed from there. How can you prove that the rig had original tire size when the claim originated? I imagine you can prove that the 245's were installed after the claim, but how does the warranty adjuster know that the tires were stock size before you bought this last set of rubber? Just asking... If you can, definetly show them those documents.

hope my math is correct, it's late....

Regards,
Craig

Brian,

You are actually SOL if they are trying to prove that. Your tire size is approximately 5% larger in diameter than the 235/70's:

Math looks good for height, but how about circumference, or actual distance covered per revolution. Don't worry, I plan to do some actual measurements at a tire store if necessary. I can however, prove the purchase of the tires after the claim. Have the invoice for the tires, plus the original work order from the mechanic when he called it in to them. It's the principal of the thing, you know..?

Brian, my dealer declined me of the CV replacment also, ended up taking it to a local shop and getting it fixed for $182.00.
Good luck

Craig,

While your math sounds good for overall height, it does not take into consideration circumferrence. Multiply both #'s by 3.1415 and you come up with 90.95" and 95.69" respectively. That comes to almost exactly 5% difference. I wish the speadsheet would have uploaded, but you are right...it is late.

Either way, if you can prove the purchase before the claim it will not be an issue. It is also up to the warranty company to prove that the larger tire caused the faliure. It is unlikely that they can.

My point is; How does the adjuster know that 235/70's were on there before the 245's??? That is going to be the biggest hurdle I think...

What's funny about this, the speedometer w/ stock 235/70 tires was less accurate than it was after I swapped to 245/75 tires. Use a GPS to measure the existing accuracy, and show it to them. (Well, I guess you can't until it's fixed first, but...)

I think I'd demand a refund if they're not going to cover anything just because of the tire size....

FWIW....

I second the GPS measure plan. I've heard cases of the MPH getting closer to the odometer after going to larger tires.

Borrow someone else's wheels, take it to a different dealer, and get it done under warrantee.

i>"f none of the shit above works, try a 55 gallon drum of ass wuppin."

I second that motion.

Also, my speedo was way off with my stock tires. Now, with 245/75/16's on, the speedo & odo are as perfect as it gets (confirmed with 2 GPS units operating simultaneously over hundreds of miles). Your insurance is just doing what insurance companies do best: fuck the client.

I concur with Blue(gill). This is a BS excuse. If the carrier is concerned about ACTUAL milage then perhaps you should go back and "credit" the milage for all of the time the miles were truly "off"--ie w/ the stock size tires. Bet you have another few miles.............

FYI--my truck came with a crappy set of 235/70. I clocked speed and miles with a buddy's GPS and with a stopwach on the measured miles of the local Interstate (speedometer check section). BOTH were "optimistic"--actual speed was less than indicated.

I installed 245/75x16 tires. Same checks. Now I too, like Blue, have speedo and odo as close to exact as possible.

Insurance companies tend to pay the people who are a pain in their collective arse............be one.

So who is the Warranty Carrier? I too am considering an Aftermarket Warranty and don't want to deal with a company that has a bad rap!
