Looking for a tire to replace stock XPC on '95 Disco with OME shocks/springs (1" lift); would like to keep stock tire radius (so I can keep stock spare tire); I live in Southern California so mud traction is not needed, wet pavement almost never encountered, never see snow, off-roading limited to forest service roads consisting of hardpack, sand, gravel, scree, and sharp boulders; I drive on these forest service roads daily. I'm not interested in a soft cushy ride; I could have bought a Ford Exploder for that. Firm ride is what I'm looking for. I tried a set of 245/70 BFG AT/KO's but replaced them after about 2 days with another set of XPCs because of their overly squirrely ride on paved roads. Pumping the pressure up to 50 psi did not help either. I'd like to replace the XPCs with something cheaper than the $220/tire price I've been quoted by the local purveyors. I like the XPC's a lot, especially the highway ride, the steering response, and the stiff sidewalls that sometimes trick me into driving 80-90 mph with only 14psi. I'm looking for something similar. I just spent the last 3+ hours or so reading all the previous threads on tires (this year and 2001 archive), and it seems that I should be considering the commercial light truck tires (trac-edge or replacement), Toyo M55, Dunlop Radial Rover, Big O XT or similar. I bought the disco because the handling was very precise. The suspension takes care of all the off-road problems I've encountered (my current nearly bald xpcs have supplied enough traction). Has anyone who has put on a set of the commercial light truck type tire have any comments on the on-pavement behavior, especially the steering? |
