Just bought a used '97 Disco a couple of days ago. Last night I thought I'd try the diff lock - see if it works. When I shift the lever to the left, according to the manual, the dashboard light should come on, but it doesn't ! I really want to believe that it's just a burnt bulb but ..... Is there any way to definitely know whether the CDL is engaged except for the light on the dash? Any input is greatly appreciated, as I'm a real newbie (previous car was a Honda Civic !!!) and I hate being bullshited by dealers. Car is an ES model with auto transmission. Thanx in advance, Angelos |

I'll bet $5 that the diff IS locked but you either have a burnt bulb or the connection that illuminates the light, somewhere, is bad. Engaging the diff is such a machanical process that if the lever IS all the way over to the left, then it HAS to be engaged. Not computer assisted or electronically assisted. Simple. |

I had problems with my 97 se7 diff lock. The light would turn on but it would not engage. You can check to see if it is working properly a couple of different ways. Get in the vehicle with the window down and it in neutral move the lever to the left...you should hear a faint clink (sounds like a pin droping) about 1/2 a second after the lever is moved. If you hear this it is probably working. If you don't take the truck to a sany hill that you can get yourself sort of stuck on and have somebody check to see if you have one front and one rear wheel spinning at the same time. If you do then it is working. Also you can get under the truck and remove the silver u shapped connection and mannually engage it from the t-case. You should be able to engage it with your hands. I had to manually engage mine for about a month and a half to get it all working correctly. Now it works great. Brian Friend |

I know you 'll be laughing your gutts out on this : A couple of days after my original post, I called a friend from inside the car, and described the problem. First thing he said was "did you try moving?". Instictively I pushed on the throttle and the car started moving. Immediately the cdl warning light was on !!!!!! ... a newbie is a newbie...is a newbie !!!! Thanx for the input though. A. |

Good thing, Angelos! You'll experience about smth similar when trying to DISengage - you might have to lift your right foot (from the throttle) to let the be enough slack to let it release. Roverly Yours, Frode |
