My oil light sometimes flickers at idle. I asked about this a while back and someone suggested that I remove the oil pan and clean the pump screen. I did this and found a lot of trash, so it was a good move, but the light still flickers. What should be my next step? Could it be the oil is too thin (viscosity breakdown)??? Thanks BJ |

Main bearings...... The engine is probably a little noisey as well.. Kyle |

Maybe it's just a break in the wire going to the sensor off the side of the oil pan sending false message when it looses continuity temporarily ? Can't hurt to check right...Have someone sit in the cab and then you get under and jiggle the wires to replicate the break amd see if you can set-off the dash light. |

About this main bearing (if that is the problem) I recently posted another query about what sounds like an exhaust leak. Sounds like the driver side of the engine, and I can only hear it when I am accelerating. When it's reved in nuetral I can't hear a thing. AND, you can hear it from the cab easily, but not under the truck with a buddy stepping on gas and brake at the same time. I did find what appears to be chimney soot on the frame by the manifold to exhaust pipe coupler, so it seems very likely that it is an exhaust leak, but if it's not... Would this main bearing problem sound like an exhaust leak and fit thses simptoms? Thanks |

Do an oil pressure test. If you have a 3.9 "B" suffix motor (with the oil pump integral with the front cover) you should be getting 40 psi at 2500 rpm. Not sure what the older 3.9s or the 4.0 should run, but someone on this board should know. If you're not getting enough pressure, you need a new oil pump (the 3.9 B pumps are not rebuildable). How many miles do you have on your oil and what brand and viscosity is it? ---Norm |

I wouldn't think that Syntec oil is the problem as long as you have enough in there. It may be something minor like the oil pressure sending unit or wiring is on the fritz. However, I would check the oil pressure ASAP. If you don't have enough oil pressure, you could be in for some trouble. THEN, I'd start worring about your main and cam bearings. I would also get a factory service manual, and if need be, the separate factory OVERHAUL manual. What year is your truck and which motor do you have? ---Norm |

I'm not sure what your oil pressure should be on that motor (I had a '95 with a 3.9 "B" suffix motor) -- I would assume yours would also be 40 psi @ 2500 rpm, but check your oil pressure against the factory service manual for the 4.0. ---Norm |

Dealer says about 10psi @ idle. Once again they seemed reluctant to give out any info, god they SUCK. |

That's too low. Even on my early 3.9 I see about 15-18 psi at low idle with 10w40 dino. Now that I have switched to 15w50 synth, I am seeing about 20 psi at idle. About 35 psi at 2500. -P |

Should I follow suit with 15w50 and see if it helps? I have a oil change to do this weekend. |

i had the same problem. Just changed the oil pressure sensor near the oil filter. Never happened again. Worked for me :-) Best regards. Erik. |
