Over the past few months or so my yellow check engine light comes on, and then after 3-5 heat cool cycles goes back off. Monday night it came on for the second time and Tuesday night it went back off. I know the computer resets the light if the problem has "fixed itself" and that to know what the problem really is I need to have the codes scanned. My question is, what would be the most common thing to give these symptoms? O2 sensor, spark plug misfire,etc....?

I have a 96 with about 105K on the odometer.

Thanks in advance

Mark

check it with an OBD2 code reader from any shop with one and come back here with the # or check on http://www.spanishtrailrovers.com they have a full listing there.
could be any number of things. misfires are pretty common. i get it once in a while.

I usually have that when there is a build up of carbon... I battle that all the time... Its noting at all.

I have this exact same problem! What is the best thing to do to fix this problem. I have checked the codes before and it gives me a 420/421 codes. I think I need new plugs and wires. Could this be a possible solution??

Thanks

i run 92 octane and run some BG44K in it once in a while now. also used some AMSOIL product that you spray in from the throttle body while the truck is running. have not had the code come back since.
but now i have compression issues. :)

gpGarrett,

Compression issues because of the BG44k and the AMSOIL product?? or for other reasons??

Where can you get these products and do you think I should change my plugs and wires if I don't know the last time it was done??

Thanks

BG44K is somewhat hard to find. at least around here. only a few places sell it. try going to their site and checking for local distribtors that way. it's about $20 a can. the AMSOIL product i used also has other counterparts that supposidly work the same. both supposidly work well. was hard to tell which one worked as my check engine light went off after using both.
my compression issues are a whole other deal. typical compression on each cylinder is about 158 in this truck. i am getting about 120 and 140 on cylinders #1 and #7. this may be due to bad rings, but will know more next week when we do another compression/leak down test again to make sure.
pull your plugs and take a look at them. good way to tell if you are getting carbon build up. hard to tell from looking if your wires are bad. one way to tell is by pulling in your garage at night and turning the lights off. take a spray bottle of water and spray the wires while the truck is running. if you see any arcing from wire to wire or any sparks for that matter you have cracks or tears in your wires. also make sure the boots that fit over the plugs are nice and snug. loose fitting boots can throw a light.

I encountered the same situation and after a good cleaning the IAC (or stepper motor as you blokes call it) and it took care of it.
