Having a problem with my brakes, I live in NYC and the road conditions here leave a lot to be desired, I have a 97 SE and when I hit my brakes I sometimes feel a knocking in the pedal as the brakes engage. At first I thought it had to do with the bumpy roads, but I'm not so sure and I wouldn't want to find out the hard way. Has anyone experienced this? Is it normal? What is the solution if it isin't? While I have your attention does anyone know of a good mechanic in the NYC area?

It's your ABS kicking in.

Yeah, its the ABS, its pretty sensetive, and sometimes it just seems to start up for no reason, DC does the SAME thing to mine. Don't worry about it, but know it happens. I think its because you kind of skip over a bump and maybe one wheel gets a little air on potholes and if your braking at the same time, it thinks your sliding and just goes for it to stop you. Hey, at least you know your brakes work, right!

Brake problem. I own a 96 SD after a recent trip to Moab my ANTI LOCK light has been flashing intermittently. Yesterday coming to a stop while turning my ABS kicked on for no reason making it difficult to stop at slow speeds I am curious to know if anyone has had a similar problem and what was done to remedy the situation. Thank you in advance Jake...

Thanks for the resonses, on the second issue does anyone know of a good mechanic in New York? Or at the very least, a good website to check for one in my area

one or more of your sensors is probably going bad.
For me it cost more than the anti locks were worth to me. I unplugged the whole ABS system and think the brakes feel ten times better.. I have never thought that the discovery had very good brakes but with the ABS unplugged I feel safer just knowing that I wont have the ABS kick on when it really shouldn't. ABS is for people who dont know how to use their brakes. sorry if I offended anyone with that last comment but I hate ABS...

Nothing specific, just looking for a good go to guy for general servicing, would love to establish a relationaship with a mechanic, as I currently don't have one. Would love to have my brakes looked at though, and I would definitely rather not go to the dealer.
