After a recent visit to the local Land Rover shop, I was told that the intake valley gasket was leaking quite a bit on my 96 disco.(50,000 miles) I ask how do you know that? I got some lame ass bullshit answer. I followed up with, why happens if I leave it the way it is? They said it would burn some more that normal. As it stands after about 3000 miles, the oil is maybe 1/2 to 3/4 of a quart low. Ii have not noticed any oil on my drive way, but have see what looks like to be an oil patch on the exhaust pipes. I think that there is some oil dripping onto the exhaust pipes and burning away. so it never reaches the drive way. It this a big problem? I read my shop manual and it seams to a rather straight forward repair. It there a way to check if it is leaking??? Should I just go ahead and replace it any way?? thanks brad |

is there oil around the outside on top at the back of the engine? If so its leaking. The end seals usually are part of the problem so replace those as well as the valley gasket. Ron |

Leaking valley gasket can lead to false air getting into the engine, misleading the EFI (BTDT), giving surging idle etc. You should also investigate why it starts leaking - internal pressure due to blow-by, what? There have been TSBs issued to do with this - do a search, look on Alldata. |
