Hi every body, I've just received a seal kit for the steering box from Atlantic British and was wondering if any body has had success with this repair? Or am I wasting my time and $. The leek appears to be from the output shaft. The Disco has no wheel shimmy or shake so I hope the lower bearing is not toast. The leak is severe I need to fill the reservoir every three days! What do you guys think, new pump, or try the seal kit? Thanks -Doug (Michigan) |

That's a tossup...... You either: Remove the present box, disassemble and fit new parts...your 1st steering box rebuild ? Then reassemble...a big job no matter what. Particularly ifin' it still leaks when you refit it. Dam*, I hate that when it happens. (hasn't but I would be mighty displeased ifin' it did) Because the fix, then, is to do the whole thing AGAIN and then get a GUARANTEED NO LEAK box from Meridian Rebuilders in San Diego. So if you have the time to risk/waste?, and can have your truck down indefinitely, and you or a valued family member doesn't slip on the red oil slick, or whatever, and you want to go thru the exercise as a learning experience, well then have at it. IF you want to do it the most efficient way, the never leak again way, call meridian. Sorry if this sounds like an ad, not meant to. It is just the best way to handle it. And I am a DEDICATED DIY'r, not likely to defer the tasks. But on this one, Meridian. |

Have you tried the Lucas aditive that many have said work? I didn't learn about it until after I re-sealed my PS box so I didn't get to try it. |

Do you have a phone number or other contact info for Meridian Rebuilders? Google and Infospace came up with nothing. I don't need their services today, but who knows what tomorrow will bring? you can email me [email protected] if you don't want to post here |

After about 7 hours and minus one pit man arm puller, Im calling it quits. I never was able to get the main shaft out of the steering box. Im not one to walk away from a repair challenge, but this just was not worth the time or the effort. The seal kit (witch I will return) was $89 and after you factor in the possibility of the box leaking after your rebuild, $310 for a rebuilt sounds pretty good right about now. Sometimes trying to save a buck doesnt pay off. Frustrated Doug (Michigan) |

To answer a few questions. Yes, first time and last. Yes used Lucas and every other stop leak product out there. I have A question for Neal or anybody that has resealed the box. How did you get the C ring off the piston end cap? I hope that makes sense. -Doug |

Doug- Great question! I got the entire box apart except that- the thing looked downright unserviceable. Whoever said get the rebuilt bo is giving the right advice. I couldn't find a rebuilt so I got a used unit that works fine. Biggest controversy seems to be getting the new unit in and the steering wheel lined back. Check old posts for this or it will madden you. Don't fall for the "pull the steering wheel" routine. |
