I have the beast, a 94 with the following curiosity: The location of the ignition wires. The loom has them locating #8 right after the side clip, yet mine is before the clip. Is this usual? My shop manual shows the one which had given me problems, but a few minutes of looking about corrected that. Anybody have a better idea of what or why the difference in the picture and the reality? Thanks in advance!

If you don't trust the wire diagram, or wonder if somebody had previously messed with the distributor, rotate the crank over to top dead center and check the orientation of the #1 ignition lead relative to the rotor. If all 8 leads are wired correctly with respect to each other, though all rotated about the distributor cap then somebody may have indexed the distributor incorrectly (is this what you mentioned...the #8 on the wrong side of the clip? Everything in the right order, just rotated one position off?).
Anyway, if the dizzy is indexed incorrectly but the #1 ignition lead is correct with respect to TDC you are in good shape. If having everything in order is a requisite, simply re-index the distributor body, rewire the cap according to the diagram, and reset the timing.
Did I understand the question correctly? Hopefully this info helps...

Jason,
Thanks for the info. No, I just updated my shop manual to correctly settle this in my head. The stock ignition wiring didn't fit the way the book had it anyway. I was just curious about the typo when the rest of the manual seems to be dead on. I work as a programmer/engineer and I tend to be a nitpicker about some things. Again, thanks for the info.

My '94 actually has the distributor rotated two over so you have to be really careful how you put the wires on...took some figuring out as to why it didn't run quite normally....but its ok now.

yep, my 95 was one off from the manual diagram. wonder if the manual is correct and this was all messed up with a dealer or where the inconsistencies came from?
