I have a 2001 SD DSII This is not sound gripe. I want specific information. No whine till now. 30K service just happened -- now she whines -- really, really high pitched sound. Mildly annoying, but clearly not present before. Up and down with acceleration. Any louder and goosbumps will form as it is at that special frequency that makes you wince with aurally induced pain. What are the most likely causes of transfer case whine? Is an increasing whine sound serious, or just part of the aging process? The case is complicated here as I just ran HIR and other trails -- so the service with its transfer case cleaning component may be just coincidence. Is a transfer case an "all or nothing" proposition? That is, if it "goes" does the whole thing have to be replaced? Is there a way to test if a transfer case is going to go before the fact? Or do you just have to let it fail? Yeah... I know. All things are relative and folks have different sensitivities to sounds; however, I have done my level best to ask clear and concise questions. Thanks MV |

Mike, my 2001 had the same problem after they replaced the first transfercase, i complained so they replaced it again and the noise level was better but still whined. My 2000 doesnt have the whine at all in any RPM and it has 47k on it. Complain your A$$ off for them to replace it before warranty runs out GOOD LUCK Alen |

Silly question... did they put the T case fluid back in after they drained it for the service? Seems incredible but I know of a repuatble Ford dealer that forgot to put fluid into a friends rear diff once. |

Mike, I just purchased an 02 disco and was having the same problem right out of the box. They were good about replacing the transfer case. The dealer told me that "some were just louder than others". Not very reassuring.?. I like Alen's advise. Complain your >U()S off until they replace it. I haven't found anybody who could tell me a good reason for the whining. Todd |

The reason they whine is that they are strait cut gears and thus will always have some whine in them. The way they are set up relies a lot on the set up to get the correct mesh of the gears so based on this some are louder than others. But having one fail completely is almost unheard of except in cases of abuse (diff lock on road) or stupidity (out of oil) Ron |

What type of gears does Disc I have("Strait" cut)? Are the tranfer case different from Series I and II? |

>"Silly question... did they put the T case fluid back in after they drained it for the service? Seems incredible but I know of a repuatble Ford dealer that forgot to put fluid into a friends rear diff once." Not so silly nor so incredible - in January my father had his Cadillac Seville serviced at the dealer, then drove from Cleveland to Key Largo...with no engine oil. They forgot to fill it after draining it. Engine is fine...at least for now... |

no foolin - oil light came on the day after they arrived in the Keys. Took it to a certified mechanic and he's like "It ain't got no oil in it." Then I think he was steered to a dealer in Miami, but I'm not sure of the details from there on. He buys all his Caddy's at the same dealer in Cleveland, so they take good care of him. If there are any issues, he'll just change-out to a new STS. He & Mom drove it back to Cleveland just last week. Freakin amazing though, that some numbskull forgets to ADD oil to that Northstar V8...damn shame. |

Agreed, NOT a silly question about replacing T Box fluid - anything is possible. One of our friends here drove all over Truckhaven without an air filter after picking his truck up from the dealer prior to trip. If you get the T case replaced Michael, remember my story ... make sure whoever does it unlocks the center diff, as they are shipped locked, and many of the mechanics have apparently been unawhare of this, and, for whatever reason, failed to check. (My blood pressure still goes up every time I think about this). .... Which brings me to: (Ron) "But having one fail completely is almost unheard of except in cases of abuse (diff lock on road) ...." Here comes a louder whine ... They put my old T case back in after this delightful discovery! ... Kim |

Are the tranfer case different from Series I and II? Sort of. With the advent of the Q in mid 98 (q for quiet) the gears changed slightly and the case was made thicker. Also spline count changed on something (forget what) anyway, its not that much quieter. Kim, what is sad is that the tech had to have test drove it and did not notice then. Ron |

My rapidly emerging problem is that I am not sure I can trust my dealer. They do a service at 30K and the next day the center diff whines like a puppy left alone for the first time. Ho writes to me suggesting I go and drive the vehicle, then engage lo, drive in different gears, then engage hi and drive some more. I do that and the whine just about vanished. The the dealer says "Your rear brakes at at less than 10% -- you must change them immediately. Cost is 260.00." I move heaven and earth and order a set of rear pads -- then look twice at them. Then I send a couple of digital pics to Kyle and ask his opinion. "Aint nothing wrong with those pads." Clearly, there is much more than the quoted < 10% wear left on the pads. My only point is that is why I asked the question here about the whine -- I have to take everything the dealer says with a pound of salt -- I have to second guess people I thought would steer me right. I mean, if you cannot trust the dealer, who can you trust?? |

Find a good independent shop who is LR trained / certified. I don't know firsthand how your warranty figures in, but once you find a good mechanic, pass along the information here. I make a point of going in the pit when I get my oil / transfer / diffs serviced to supervise the filling of fluids. Many shops will allow you down there if you ask nicely. A sixer of Bass or Newcastle for the shop goes a long way too. I don't have time to do my own fluids now, but I won't let someone else do it without checking the work. e |

who can you trust?? Trust your own eyes. Until your warantee is up you pretty much have to use the dealer (or pay someone). LR min spec on pads is 4/32nds. Your dealer should tell you how much pad is left. To be honest you CAN run the pads down a little more, say to 2/32nds but I tend to change mine when they get anywhere close to worn down. Makes the calipers and rotors happier. Pads are cheap and easy to DIY. So whats the spec on the pads? Ron "I do that and the whine just about vanished." weird. |

Doc, I just got my 30k done as well. And guess what??? I need new rear pads! Supposedly, I have less than 10% also. Coincidence? Luckily pads are relatively cheap. chu |

Well, well: I actually used a nifty device to measure the pads: I have about 12/32 actual material left on both rears. to me that sure as hell does not translate into "< 10%" with the additional dire warning of no more than a couple of hundred miles left.... And Chu? Check your own brakes!! Hate to see you slip off Knocker Rocker! |

New rear pads at 30k? I just ordered myself some new rear pads and I have 81k. These are the original pads too... >"I have to take everything the dealer says with a pound of salt -- I have to second guess people I thought would steer me right. I mean, if you cannot trust the dealer, who can you trust??" Welcome to the club, Michael. It's all part of the "Land Rover Experience". My local dealer had a huge banner with that slogan over the sales area front door. I told them they should hang it over the service desk. You're doing the right thing by checking yourself and verifying your observations with the likes of Kyle & Ho. Ain't it nice to have a resource like them? |

Maybe the marketing team and LRNA sent out a bulletin to the service advisors on a tactic to pull in more revenue. chu |

Yeah, Blue.... It is nice! I was thinking those guys ought to start their own little business (and sheeittt..... here I go again with another idea). Goes like this: You need to replace, say, your brake pads. You dial 1-800-RoverMe and Kyle's secretary answers. She takes your info, address, and CC number. Two days later you get this used but functional laptop in the mail (likely an icky PC) with a web cam. You hook it up at your appointed time in your garage, focus the web cam on the job area, and the DW team walks you through the the brake job. Or the lift job. See? Back at DW central, which looks like a Bond Command Center, all thse consoles show different repair and modifcation jobs in progress. All by do it your selfers -- and all paying some type of on line consulting fee. So the DW team can actually be carrying on multiple repair jobs at the same time. Sort of like chat conversations. After the job, you repack the laptop and cam and call Fed Ex -- they pick up. Now tell the truth!!! If you are both computer literate and a real mechanic, then this has got to be a sweet setup. Damn!! Another awesome idea!! Heheh! MV |

Denver South Land Rover replaced my transfer case today on my 2002 DII SD, bought new in November. It started to whine about 2 weeks ago after some light wheeling. I think this is the 8th time I have had the Rover in for repair so far. Mike Holmes |

Speaking of brake pads - I had my Disco into a main dealer for a service - 500 miles after the service, the front pads wear right down the the metal - they hadn't even bothered to check them -ruined my drivers side disc (rotor). Matt. |

Funny this post came up. I have a new DII with 3500 miles on it nosw and also have that T-Box whine as well. It seemed to happed about a week after I got it. I took it to Land Rover Hunt Valley. They hopped in and gave it a test drive with me to hear the noise. "Yep" they said..."Its the T-Box whine"..."its normal for a Discos T-Box to whine a little. Some are louder than others but yours is quite loud." They proceeded to tell me that if its still this loud at my 7500 mile check up they will drop the T-box and install a new one. Now I don`t mind the noise on a short trip but DAMN its enough to give you a head ache on a long trip. Just glad i`m not the only one haveing this problem. Damn I can`t wait till my 7500 mile check up to get a new one!! and i hope that solves it. Also want to give LR Hunt Vally a big Thank You for checking out my Disco on such short notice. |
