I have my 97 sd in for an oil leak and the major problem was the oil sensor ( dealer speak ). They also informed me that the head and main bearing are showing signs of leaking as well. With this repair running in the $5500 range is it worth doing or upgrading to a 4.6l? Looking for some helpful advice. Mike |

Damn. Dealers suck. Is the head leaking oil or coolant? And I don't know what the hell a main-bearing leak is since the main bearings are the primary reason you put oil in your engine. They are supposed to be bathed in oil. The only possible place for that area to leak is the oil pan which covers them and fixing that leak is a 2 hour job. Since you are looking at a "big repair bill" why not see how far you can go on your current motor. I'd be it'll do another 100k miles. Did I mention I hate dealers? Find a new shop that actually knows something about your truck. -P |

You sure its not the heads and rear main seal leaking? The engine is running and in one piece at the moment correct? Get a written estimate and come back and tell us what it says when you have it. Ron |

If you are going to do that for $5500 Just change it to a diesal. That is what I would do. And then you wouldn't have to deal with all the electrical problems |

Where was you initial oil leak coming from and how much oil were you losing? Could the "oil sensor" be the "oil sending unit"? This is a little electrical module on the oil pump that reads your oil pressure. The only reason you'd need a rebuild for a sending unit failure would be if you lost oil pressure and didn't know it -- or if the sending unit itself somehow came unscrewed and your oil pump started lubricating the roadway. Is your motor making any unusal noises like tapping or rumbling? I'd take it to another Rover mechanic (preferably a reputable independent) and get a second opinion. Also, knowledge is power -- get a factory service manual and go over it yourself so that you understand the problem. A complete engine rebuild seems like an extreme solution for a bad sending unit, head gasket, and/or main seal. If it really does need a rebuild, I'd get a factory v8 overhaul manual as well. ---Norm |

Hrmmm ... just change to a Diesel.... i love this idea!!! How on earth would you do that in the US? Import an engine? I wish more US vehicles were avail with diesel power. The VW TDI is a *SWEET* little unit! Cheers, bender2033 |
